I'm not old but I can appreciate history. I am also not a Fender fan boy. I like some Fender stuff but I'm not in a Fender headlock. I also prefer the sound of Gibsons if you're making an a/b comparison.

I thought it was some sort of semi hollow body. I remember reading an interview where he said that the first time he was given a strat he was amazed that it didn't break when he threw across a road or when it fell off his car or something.

and Hubert Sumlin (Howlin Wolf's guitar player) and Chuck Berry's early stuff. Freddie King too before he switched to Gibson Hollowbodies.

The entire reason Clapton picked up a Les Paul he was into Freddie King and on the cover for Hideaway he's holding a Les Paul Goldtop. Clapton got a hold of burst with humbuckers and the rest is history.

I'm of a similar opinion but isn't the Les Paul technically a signature model?

I wouldn't say so, it was based on something he had invented rather than being a customized instrument just for him. Also, if you believe the man himself (he was known to get various details of the guitars' origins wrong though), they weren't originally going to label it a Gibson, and that's when he told them to just call it a Les Paul.
The first notable "signature" mass production guitar was the Fender Eric Clapton model in the 80s, 20 years on people are so "sig model" crazy that everyone and his brother goes "lol at a signature LP, isn't it a sig already?"

They had sig models long before Eric Clapton.

A signature model is an endorsed guitar with somebody's name on it. The modern definition of a signature model has come to be an iconic guitar with a history that's copied to capitalize on nostalgia/fandom/popularity but that's not what it was.

Of course the Les Paul model is a signature model, it's right there on the damn headstock. It has just become so ubiquitous people forget.

According to wikipedia the 'Les Paul' was designed by Ted McCarty and some say that the only contribution Les made was the trapeze tailpiece and the colour... Of course I'm not going to research it thoroughly but I think it does meet the standards for being a signature model and probably the most popular signature model ever.
