finally finished this. i fucking hate polishing guitars. took about 3 hours to get a mirror finish. pictures don't really show the shine or colour. i'll get some in natural light tomorrow

HVLP are not to badly priced. I got a new HVLP (high volume low pressure) gravity fed spray gun from Lowes/Home Depot for like $60. I like it cause you can control the spray pattern. Just make sure you get a metal cup, my plastic cup didn't last more then a week before the lacquer thinner dissolved the lid. I used to buy lacquer by the gallon for $20... thin it down 50/50 lacquer/thinner, and have two gallons. Then store em in mason jars. Lacquer does not have a shelf life, if you store it correctly. Don't forgot a moisture trap (water inside the air compressor) if you plan on using a spray gun, they are like $30 at Sears.

Lately I only use spray cans cause they are cheap, no clean up. I've just been to cheap to get a metal cup for my spray gun, a gallon of thinner for clean up... and $35 a gallon - clear - s/s - satin.

Better finish than my projects. Did you use a buffer attachment on a drill or do it by hand, what compound did you use?

initially used wet and dry (wet) 800 up to 1500 grade. then t-cut a few times and a lot of hand polishing. i was thinking about getting a buffer but the amount of times i would use it make it a bit of a luxury. takes a lot of time and effort. still not perfect now, probably another 3-4 polishes before it gets there.
