I'll never use the other colours, though 21/25 purple is fine and I can put 5 in a box to look at every so often/know I have them. So if I need to be included for everyone else to get their colours I'll be up for it.

i use .88 , don´t remember colour it is
He included his address as well, so we need two more people to offer a plectrum each or we just send him three of whatever colour .88 is.

This is from the customs site.
2.7 Do multi-gift packages containing more than one gift qualify for the £36 customs duty waiver and import VAT relief?

(i) Where a package contains gifts that are clearly intended for several people, for example, members of the same family, the £36 VAT relief applies to each individual person provided the goods are:
  • individually wrapped, and
  • specifically addressed to them, and
  • declared separately on the customs declaration
  • within the allowances specified.
If more than one individual package is addressed to a particular person the value of the goods will be aggregated. If the total value exceeds £36 import VAT will be charged, and if the value exceeds £120 customs duty may also be due.

(ii) If a package contains a number of different types of goods intended for one person, and these are separately described and given a value on the customs declaration, the waiver of customs duty will apply to each item. For import VAT only as many items as add up to a value not exceeding the import VAT threshold (£36) will be granted relief. However, the value of an item cannot be divided, for example, if a package contains five items each with a value of £8, only four items will be entitled to relief with charges payable on the fifth item.
So if ends packages the lot individually, and addresses them to inidviduals here, we can avoid customs for sure.

Perhaps the best way to do it is to work out the total value for insurance purposes, and then work out how many plectrums are worth about £30. Divide them up envelopes that size and use the real addresses. That way the guys who have ordered more than £36 worth can still avoid the charges and the total value will still be insured. Then I can open the envelopes, count out the orders and re-use the envelopes to post with.

The only ambiguous part is the £120 customs duty level, although it's worded as though that would apply to an individual. If it is the case that customs duty is charged it could mean we're looking at a £13.50 handling fee on top of that. From what I understand customs duty is automatically waived if it's below £7, and for values below £290 a rate of 2.5% is charged if it's to the advantage of the person receiving the goods. So declaring the value as £279 would bring in a customs duty charge of £6.975 and we'd definitely avoid it. I'm not sure what the value of the UK batch is in £, but it's probably around that so if it's a little over putting it at that sort of price would mean we can definitely avoid both VAT and customs charges.

Take nine of the UK addresses. Get an envelope for each and put 100 picks inside. Divide them up however you want. And then have one pack of 100 in a seperate packet, like a little baggy or whatever loose inside the main envelope (as though it's for me).

On the customs form you'll have to put each address, and put the value for each as £25 (put $39 or so) and a total value of £250/$390. It means you have a much longer customs form to fill out, but it will save us paying £50 to customs. To avoid the charges you definitely have to have them addressed individually as though I could just put a stamp on them here and send them on and have all 10 addresses on the customs form.

I'll get envelopes for the remaining addresses and sort out the orders into what they should be. Also I'll give you the amount you need to send here, it'll be something awkward like 166 Purple, 135 Blue.. rather than neat blocks of 25 because of the one of each part but it will be simple enough still.

Hall of Fame, now.

This is without doubt, the best post that has ever appeared on Shortscale. Makes previous greats such as Shad's 20000 Post post seem lazy and insignificant.
