any opinions on the squier vintage mod. jazz bass?

i'm thinking i quite like these basses, certainly looks-wise (apart from perhaps the anaemo-maple), just wondered if anyone had played one? all the videos on youtube are fuckwits trying to play funk or slap bass, annoyingly.

gavin said he saw one in a local branch of crack generator for Â£190. i could live with that price for what'll essentially be a 'mucking about on and occasional live/recording' instrument, it doesn't have to be pure amazing.

but!! is it worth a bus journey to investigate? or should i just cough up the extra cash and get a classic vibe?

I loved the one I had. They play very easy and sound good for a squier. I think it sounded better than my MIM jazz bass did.

Jazz basses, like teles, are one of those designs I find very few manufacturers screwing up too badly. A Squier VM will certainly do ya, they have great necks provided you find one with a decent fretjob.

I like the way that they look but that's it. For the price, it's only slightly more expensive to get a classic vibe jazz bass which sounds, and feels 10,000 times better in my opinion. This bass is jut too heavy... like way too heavy... and it sounds ok, but not great like the classic vibe does.

i was put off heavily when the guy in the shop told me the neck blocks were painted on. i know they have to cut corners and all, but... nah.

Wouldn't painted on ones wear terribly? I know maple necks are generally laquered but we've all seen what happens when they're played a lot. I had a MIM standard that was a 2000 model or maybe 2001 and in six years of owning it and not that frequent play it had started to wear in places. I suppose there's a chance it will look good when the paint starts to wear, but I think it is much more likely to look shit.

My weird old Antoria 330 had painted on blocks, had had the life played out of it for at least twenty years, and they were still rock solid.
