Yeah I need a mic too, SM58 or summat similar would do, just for recording Vox. Any Uker's got a spare one lying around that they wouldn't mind parting with for a reasonable amount?
Anyone try modding their SM57? A buddy of mine is supposed to come over at some point and we'll mod a couple. I think it mainly involves taking the transformer out. In any case, will report back if we ever get around to it. I used to have three but gave a couple to a buddy of mine and am currently down to one. I mainly use it for mic'ing guitar cabs along with something else; and there are a couple of vocalists I've recorded who like singing through it.

i haven't ever done it, but i would do it if i had two of them.
besides that business below 200Hz (which is corrected by proximity effect (when you shove it up to the speaker cone)) it's not bad. what would a mod fix?
Apparently it extends the low frequency response a bit, smooths out the midrange bump some, and adds a bit more high frequency response. It also lowers the output.

I recommend the Sennheiser e835 for a good, polyvalent cheap mic. They're pretty fantastic on vocals. I have used them to record snares, as drum overheads and to close mic guitar cabs before and in my opinion, they perform just as well, and depending on what you like to hear (e835s have a bit more bass response), possibly slightly better than SM57/8s. They list anywhere between $99 and $119 but in my experience, you can often get them for 80-90 bucks.
