When I record with my Line 6 Toneport, the mic channel always has a lot of white noise. It seems to be there with all mics (although I only have 4, so...). Is it just the cheap preamps this thing probably has? So far, the best way to get rid of it is to record a few seconds of silence and then use the noise filter in Audition to clear it out. It actually works pretty well and doesn't change the tone too much.
Any thoughts?

ON my Tascam us-122, I get a otn of white noise if I'm running phantom power to a dynamic mic. Which youre not supposed to do.

Nope - phantom power switch is off.
Oh - I only use dynamic mics on my voice. I just don't sound good with condensers (I never really sound good, but I sound worse.)

I just tested all my mics.
GUESS WHICH ONE HAS THE LOWEST NOISE FLOOR
► Show Spoiler
FUCKING 1951 EV 611. 2 modern mics, 1 '70s SM57, and the lowest noise floor is from a 60-year-old hi-Z dynamic with a capsule the size of a half-dollar. Even after turning up the gain to match output, it was still around 4db less noisy.
I was playing with the preamp models and found I can get lower noise floors on the "Modern" setting. Maybe Line 6 modeled the hiss of the old consoles too?

Could be electronic interference from power cables, monitors, whatever.

dude, they make cheap electronics, not somewhat-mobile-machines with "period correct line noise."

Line 6 mic preamps are fucking shit. They are the source of your white noise.
I can open my Edirol's all the way without hearing a jot.

My TonePort has no white noise. I can get clear recordings from my dynamic and condenser mics. :/

I like to think of white noise as digital tape hiss...sounds kooler to say.

Make sure you've got any of the inboard effects off or muted out, those things can hiss like a banshee.
