bought my first mustang.

i bought myself a "hot rodded '71 mustang" off ebay on wednesday. its looks like it was someone's project guitar. non-original color (looks like its some sort of metallic green?) but its a nice finish by what i see in the pics of the auction and im having these ideas of painting a semi-dark red racing stripe.(think it would complement the green) he also put SD hotrails in both pup positions. but what seems like the biggest alteration is that he changed it to a hardtail guitar with a "strat style" bridge. personally i loved the mustang bridge but im curious as to how itll sound when it gets here (tuesday-ish). best part out of all of this was the price (just over $400 with shipping). so for a vintage i think i got a pretty good deal. ill get pics up as soon as it gets here.

Looks cool enough. Those pics are terrible. Looks like he was photographing in a fog. I would definitely try it out before changing anything out. I am waiting impatiently for a AVRI Jag I bought used to get here. I love eBay but hate waiting for stuff to ship.

Definitely get yourself a good tube amp. Can't go wrong with tubes.

I was looking at a used Jag-stang, but I may wait and hold out for a Mustang.

yea i cant wait for it to get here (it being my first electric) and see how it sounds. always had a crush on the mustang and despised the stratocaster.

i was looking at the marshall md30 or mg30 amps and a couple pedals. (as im a struggling newbie and have a very tight budget) GC was having a sale (like $199 for the amp) very tempting but im broke. guess ill have to deal with my dads kustom amp. i really want an amp that'll complement the humbuckers. for that foo fighters crunchy sound.

looks like a duo-sonic, or he filled in the spring routes (which i would consider unlikely). you should definitely put a duo-sonic bridge on it though. that strat one looks terrible.

i have a 73 in basically the same colors. that neck almost looks like a replacement. you should have him send you a picture of the whole guitar, as all the ones in the auction are just pieces.

those tuners with the headstock make it look like a stratocaster. need better pics when you get it.

great find, good price (assuming the neck is a mustang neck). welcome also.

so a duo sonic bridge eh? that would be cool, but my friend has the two string per saddle setup on his telecaster and he complains about the strings not seating properly. same problem with the duo? im not against it completely though. plus i hope i wasnt jived on the body with some cheapo squire or mexi duo body

if you worry about anything, worry about that neck. i'm sure it's fine, it's just really bright to be vintage, + the tuners.

i'm sure a duo bridge will be just fine. not only will it look better, but there's plenty of people who use them. shit, you could actually put a MIM toronado bridge on it, and i think they have 6 saddles.

it isn't a mexican duo or squier body. the tuners look 80s to me.

there are also reissue duo-sonic bridges with 6 saddles, and they're string-through-body.

very cool franken duo-stang (i think i found its nickname!) idea! and youre right about the neck. actually as long as i like it i wont do anything to it. he says the neck is dated quote "August 1971 B" and i really dont know what the B means lol. i know those 70's and 80's cbs necks used the funky dating system.i was going to do something like this to a reissue anyways.

if you were to change the bridge to what? a duo RI would have string through (using the ferrules), as would a toronado bridge. i would leave them...

B should stand for the radius of the neck. A is the rare one, B is the common one.

hah sorry i typing hecticly and im not to good with modding yet. (again newbie) i love the duo bridge idea. ill see how its plays when it gets here and ill satisfy all ur pic needs then. personally im impartial to upgrades. mustang neck + mustang body + nice pups = great guitar. not too worried about matching vintage parts lol

If it were me, I would not be contemplating changing stuff until I actually had the guitar there and played it for a while.

But if you are considering bridge/ saddle changes, ebay seller giantguitars makes and periodically sells brass saddles of the two-strings per barrel type for the traditional Musicmaster/ Duosonic bridge, which have been compensated/angled for optimized intonation for these guitars. He says they work for the 24" scale variety as well as the 22.5".

I'm pretty sure B is the WIDTH of the neck at the nut - they were offered in A, B, C and D. If you ever see a D width neck it looks bizarre, like a classical guitar. If you want to see A vs B, a Jazz Bass is usually A width, a Precision Bass is usually B width.

Neck Width.
From March 1962 to 1969, Fender marked their necks with an "official" neck width letter at the butt of the neck (in front of the date code). The "B" neck width is the normal width, as used on about 99% of all Fenders from this period. All other sizes were available by special order only. Also all pre-1962 Fender necks have a 1 5/8" nut width (though I'm sure there are some exceptions, but none I have seen).

A = 1 1/2" wide at the nut.
B = 1 5/8" wide at the nut (normal size).
C = 1 3/4" wide at the nut.
D = 1 7/8" wide at the nut.
