Stringing the Jaaguaaaar!
My new (used) AVRI Jaguar will be here in a couple of days and I wanted to ask the Jaguar players what kind and gauge of strings you would recommend?
The salesman said it currently had flat-wound strings on it. I tend to play Rock/Alternative and it appears my Jaguar already has the Mustang bridge on it.
I have played anything from .09s on my PRS (now sold), .010s on my Squier Duo Sonic and Jagmaster, to .12s on my Taylor acoustic guitars. I have used DAddario, Elixir (acoustic), and GHS strings.

ha yea but uh, anyway I think the general consensus around here is that the fender shortscales function best with no less than 11s.
I would be interested to know how those flatwounds sound though. I think they could give you a really cool sound on a trebly guitar like a jag.
cogito ergo sum...thing or other...

its true, Aen never warned me the jag would be in open c when he shipped it to me.aen wrote:I forget to mention that I employ a cusotm tuning, so for most folks 11s shoudl be fine.aen wrote:12s felt best for me.
however it led me to a tuning i hadn't played in before.
also on topic.
11's w/ wound 3rd work great for short scales, although i now use those on 25.5" and use 13's on 24" and shorter.

I have fallen out with the flatwounds...
These are my current favourites;

Current internal debate: wound G?

I borrowed something close to your custom tuning and used it a step (or half a step sometimes) down for a few months, hence the 13s.aen wrote:I forget to mention that I employ a cusotm tuning, so for most folks 11s shoudl be fine.aen wrote:12s felt best for me.
Anyway, if this thread does anything, it shows that Horses for Courses really holds true.
Just start out with 11s and see how it feels. If you're using 10s on a duo-sonic I can't see you wanting to go as high as me on a Jag.
I suppose it just depends what you're used to. I used to play on 9s when I was learning guitar and so when I got a Jag-Stang and started using 11s it was a big step up for me. After a while I got used to it though and then I started putting 11s on my 25.5" scale guitars, which I felt was quite stiff at first, but I'm used to it now so that 11s on the Jag feel quite bendy and easy to play.
