i have one from that period, the neck has a slightly smaller profile than my compstang and i wouldn't say it was particularly heavy.

This is getting a little offtopic gents. I posted pictures of my guitar yesterday. Does the bridge and esp. the saddle height look abnormal to you?

i just compared your picture:

to my duo-sonic, your saddles are way higher than mine and the action on my guitar is fine. which suggests there's either something up with your neck, or the neck pocket is far too shallow.

You could be right. Can you do me a favor and measure the height of the neck on your duo sonic? From the heel where it sits in the neckpocket to the highest point of the fretboard (excluding the frets). Thanks :)

ok, if you imagine i turned the guitar on its side: the thickness of the neck pocket (measuring from the back of the guitar to where the neck sits) is 22mm. the neck from the bottom of the pocket to the top of the fingerboard (not taking the radius into account) is 23mm.

looking at the bridge, the top of the (low E side) saddle is about 2mm above the top of the lip of the bridge (where the strings come through).

i'd have taken some photos to illustrate, but my PC is in for repair, and i'm using a rather software-less laptop. if you can hang on a couple of days i can upload some pictures (or someone else with a MM/duo can step in?).
