The number is V155881. I looked on Fender's site and it could be any number of years. the manual in the case said 2002

Nope, 1995 it was. The pre '96 Jag-stang did NOT have the 'Designed by Kurt Cobain' or the 50th Anniversary stickers. Ask Rob Roe. he has an original also.

Fender Japan is essentially a different company that just licenses the Fender name. It's a little more complicated than that as I'm sure the contract stipulates more specifically what they're allowed to make and where they're allowed to sell it but Fender USA and Fender Japan are not run by the same people. Fender Japan is parented by two japanese musical instrument wholesalers, Kanda Shokai and Yamano Gakki.

Fender owns a controlling portion of Fender Japan so in the end they have the final say. But it's pretty much left to operate as it's own comapny in terms of products and such. There are times however when Fender cracks the whip like when the Japanese websites were selling new products direct to the US.

I think the Fender Japan brand was a brilliant move by Fender because they cut the heart out of a lot of the Fender copies. If you can't beat em join em, like for real.
