I'm using Ableton to create beats, its ok but wondering you guys have any tips for creating fills & rolls? Or if there is a decent free program out there? Pref one with real drum samples.

i use a couple condenser mics, and then close mice a drum kit with a couple 57's and whatever that kick drum mic is
and just record the fills and rolls that i'm looking to loop..

so.. what i'm saying is, i haven't got a clue.

When you're programming beats just think about what a real person could actually play/hit at once. Fills etc can often get too busy. Some software lets you humanize your beat, that's great for getting that natural vine and removing the sterile robot rock element.

for loops look for beta monkey torrents.

otherwise get a nice drumcomputer, or even better a drumkit and soundproofed room and good mics (no go if you're poor like me)

Yup, it's no fun, but if you have a talent for it you can get good results.

Doog programs stuff really rapidly for us in a really old version of Cakewalk when we're doing demos, he just programs what he would play which comes fairly naturally as he is a great drummer in his own right. I sit there and offer vague opinions "A snare there?"
