Re-fret

Post by ploppy »

I'm going to have a go at refretting my '90's squier duo-sonic as there's at least 4 that need replacing.
Could anyone advise what type of fret wire i should buy?
Checking out fleabay there's different types of wire.
A refret on my squier tele cost 100 quid with set-up so i'm going to have a go myself.

You mean the different gauge of wire? You can go to the Warmoth website and they give the exact size and example of guitars that they are used on, 6105 is standard fret size for Fenders (I think).

hold on, STOP! before you rip out the frets, or over pay someone for it.
try a few fret level i HIGHLY doubt that your 90's guitar needs a re-fret. altho you didn't say, im going to gues that frets 1-4 are rather worn on the d,g,and b strings.
i.e. there are dents in the frets where the strings are fretted and becuz of this they may be fretting out.
those dents are less than 1/64th of an inch(trust me) they just look deeper than they really are. PLEASE take your guitar to a luthier and have the frets leveled and crowned, or you can ask me really nicely and i will give a step by step on how to properly level your frets.
there are a few members on here that have followed my directions and had great results. mezz being one of them, along with mo rawka, and at least 2 others that illude me at the moment.
