super-sonic parts

Post by frozensignal »

Hey, newbie here. Sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Anyway, I have a super-sonic. I picked it up for $75 brand new in 1999 from a store in NJ that had supposedly gotten a hold of some repossessed guitars from another store and had a massive sale (yeah, NJ..). I'm looking to make a quick buck and sell it for $125. Just kidding - I did browse around this forum a bit :)

So, one of the volume knobs has recently come loose on it, and I was wondering if anyone on here knows where I might be able to find a replacement, original knob. If not, what would be compatible? Even better, do you think something might just snap back into place??

Also, a lot of the hardware is pretty badly rusted (it actually was a bit when I got it), especially the pickup adjustment screws and a washer around the toggle switch, and I'd like to replace them. Are pickup adjustment screws universal? What about the pickguard screws? I suppose I could just measure everything and order from McMaster, but if there is a compatible guitar part it would save me from getting a pack of 100 machine screws!

Back to that store - so I could have alternatively purchased a Valley Arts guitar for the same $75 (unsure of the model- some custom strat copy, beautiful green finish, gold hardware, EMG pickups). I liked the feel and action on the Super-Sonic better, and I hadn't heard of Valley Arts at the time, but now think I may have passed on a gem. DId I make the right decision? I'm still not sure to this day..

broken knob?

Guitar is useless now. But I'll do you a favor and buy it off you so you don't totally lose out. I'm just that type of guy.

Welcome.

The knobs on Super Sonics are the same as reissue Mustang knobs so just look for those.

The screws can be purchased for cheap at any music shop. The shops around here sell packs of 24 Fender pickguard screws for like three of four dollars.

You made the right decision, Super Sonics rule.

Well the guitar's hardware is pretty notorious for rusting, but it can be easily replaced. The knobs, as mentioned, are RI mustang knobs.

I think you made a good choice. Personally, I love my Super Sonic, the neck on it is fantastic and the action is low just how I like it. IF you decide to get rid of it, many members of this forum would love to own one, and they would offer a fair price for it.

Cool, thanks guys.

I don't have any plans to sell now, but if that ever changes I'll be sure to put up a post here.

If you want one, here is one on ebay going for $350

Blue Sparkle is my favorite color. Needs a little TLC:

I have been seeing some really good deals on guitars lately.

I missed out on a Squier 51 some had at $1 with NR . I would have bought it for $1

I might bid on it if I had some extra.

So, how rare are these exactly? Any estimates on the total production? I heard there used to be a site that kept a database on it but it doesn't exist anymore.

No idea of the production run and their not rare per se... but those who have them never seem to want to let them go. They generally seem to sell for 400-500 pretty regularly. In al honesty it's really a $250 guitar at best, but the market is the market. you got a great deal either way.

does anyone know the fretboard radius on the super sonic? i really love the neck, and fender says my tele custom has a 7.5 radius neck, but the super sonic feels much smaller!!!!!

It's not the radius you're feeling a difference in, the smaller feeling is the profile.
