The other day I spotted a listing from a dude in Japan selling & shipping Japanese '73 Reissue Fender Mustangs on eBay.
There are some cool color combos include many models with matching headstocks.
I like the orange one, but they're all freakin' schweet. Here are a few samples. The only trouble is that you're likely to get slammed by customs when the guitar arrives from Japan and the taxman starts playing his song.

My plan is to travel with my family -- with me, my wife, and my 3 kids, we'll be able to bring back 5 guitars! We'll all claim that were part of a rock-and-roll version of the Von Trapp Family Singers and that we brought these axes with us from the US.
Hence, no need to pay the customs man! Anyway, that's my plan.
probably not 4x the price, but i could see a US made stang retailing for $1500 - 1800. too much, but so are avri jaguars at $1900, and they've got enough hardware to justify being more spendy than a mustang.
i'm sure i've looked at costs before, but importing one of those japanese competition models works out the same as what i paid for my vintage compstang. not worth it.

I have some Japanese colleagues at work. I am *SO* tempted to ask them if they'd be willing to act as my "agent", buy the orange 'Stang on my behalf (I'd get the one w/ the matching headstock), and then transport it back to the US as if it were their own work-a-day axe.
So, has anyone purchased one from Japan? How do they figure out what taxes you owe? I'd like some details on the realistic expense involved in this, and how exactly this works. Thanks.
