With the Squier Tele Custom and Squier Tele Custom II I've found it's NOT the pickups but the amp. How do I know ? Even after buying a Lead III to replace one I sold stupidly after injuring my left/fretting hand at work I discovered it wasn't what I remembered in humbucker "tone". Once I acquired my Crate "V"Series 1512 & Crate GT-80 DSP did I realize my mistaken observation, at least I didn't change the pups and the "V" Series amp was a garage sale find by my girlfriend of 23 yrs, for $40.00. All it needed was to be wiped down first with Fantastic on a damp cloth, a vacuum of the rear compartment and a tightening of the input jack nut. And here I bought the Lead III thinking the Squier Tele Custom was lacking which it wasn't.
