if i got a metal pedal for my first, i would've put the guitar down and never touched it again. shits are scary bad stupid unnecessary.

my vote is ds-1 or ds-2.

Boss DS1. Solid build, decent range of tones to get started, not complicated to use and it's Orange.

I was assuming nowadays punk rock = godawful metalcore.

But the Metal Muff is a surprisingly cool pedal.

I agree the Metal Muff is a great pedal. The EQ on it is really good. The boost is a little harsh but if it's kept low it's not bad. It's a lot more expensive than a DS-1 though. Everyone should have a DS-1  They're like $30, metal enclosure and are really a decent sounding pedal.

Exactly what I thought. DS-1 for authentic rude tonez. Keep it simple. Multi-fx would probably be too much information.
+1

But not a DS-1.

Cheers for the advice chaps - something simple like ds-1 sounds about right: what would be a sub 40 quid alternative with better tonezz or more cool kudos? Is the bheringer equivelent better? If anyone has a good dano second hand but mint with box and stuff that could be an option maybe?

Do it. Pretty much ignore all the other recommendations in this thread, they have been shit.

DS-1 - it's just awful. Seriously. Trebly wank, it might even kill her love for the guitar.

A multiFX is something you have to WANT to get because it involves lots of learning and tweaking. The Guv'nor will give her a great punk sound with minimum fuss.

Nah, fifty presets on a Zoom 505, you just work your way through going "Ooh!" "Euch!" "Erm..." etc.

I bought a Zoom 505 for exactly those reasons, I wanted to try out a bunch of different effects cheaply. It's was so shit at each effect and it was so tiresome to use that I ended up leaving it on the Marshall stack setting all the time. They're shit and she'll probably only ever use one or two of the effects, so you might as well get her one good distortion.

And a desire to make sounds she's not interested in, also.

505 piece of pooh. Got my original dark grey no knobs 505 out this week to remind myself what it had going on..... and yes, I reminded myself it's a noisy piece of plastic crap that isn't even any good as a tuner. At a push it's OK for playing with head phones so as not to annoy the neighbours. I hope to god Zoom sorted out the hiss for the updated silver model.

THIS. It may not look kool but it pisses on everything around its price range, it will cover any Punk sound, from crunchy Clash tones to the heavier thrashy stuff like Bad Brains, Discharge, the Exploited.

Thanks for all the great suggestions chaps - I've shown my mate them and left it to him to decide based on price and the advice you've all given. Much apreciated as always! I'll let you know what the end result is.. maybe this will be the making of the nxt Avril Levigne or the next uummm someone more credible or something.
