He's into upscale Epi's at that price or even a Gibby Studio for just a bit more cash. I'd not do it at that cost.

On the used market? I see them going for $400 on craigslist all day long. Gibby Studios usually in the 500-600 range.

I would not buy an Epiphone nowadays... the quality of the frets / wiring etc is terrible !! Every second day I have a customer come in complaining of buzz and dodgy wiring... which I'm expected to wave my magic wand and fix there and then. I've been on the Les Paul forums and they re-do the frets immediately and basically gut the guitar and build them back up. The pickups are muddy as hell too. Unless your willing to pay for a substantial setup or do some work on it yourself then by all means. It can potentially be a nice guitar.
I would say the Hofner would be a better guitar to go for. Do you know if it has a set neck, that would be a big perk !!

Aye, Epiphone dropped the ball some time ago unfortunately. They provide a good chassis for improvement though, but then, so do brands like Vintage at less cost.
I'd look for old Jap stuff like Aria pro, Yamaha studio, Vester, CSL (Ibanez variants) or even the usual candidates.. Burny, Tokai etc.
Dont know much about this Hofner, other than no-one has really complimented the brand other than the vintage stuff.
