Making a bass cab

Post by Berto »

I just bought a Hartke 2500 amp head. It's 250w at 4 ohm and 180 at 8 ohm. I have decided on a closed and ported design, but I am not quite sure what configuration to have (2x12, 2x10, or 1x15). Information and opinions would be most appreciated.

Personally I think 2x12 is a good choice, if you can find two decent speakers. Is the cab going to be a 4 ohm or 8 ohm?

Also Spaced FTW.

I'm leaning toward the side of 4 ohms. I have a 12" eminence basslite speaker that I used to mod my trace elliot boxer 65 with. The other thing I am also wondering is whether I should install tweeters (horns) in the cab as well.

!!!!UPDATE!!!!
I am going with a 2x12 and a tweeter. Now my questions are:

How big does the cab need to be?
How deep should the ports go in?
How wide in diameter do the ports need to be?

I'm in no way an expert on these things (I may not know what I'm talking about at all) but I would think that as long as your speakers/inards fit in the cab, and you have a place for the speaker cable jack, you could probably keep things as small as you can. Keep things a carry-able as possible. Also maybe add handles or casters or both?

Yeah the overall goal is to make it portable, so one person can carry it alone.

3/4 inch plywood? that cab is not going to be very portable, easily in excess of 60 lbs.

This is something I've been considering for a while myself. I bought an amp at the beginning of the summer (Peavey T-Max (review)) that I've only played through once due to a lack of cabinet :/ Before getting the amp, I was thinking about setting up an open-back 212 to use with my Fender Twin Reverb instead of the guitar-voiced speakers in the combo... unfortunately, most of the info I gathered is on a forum that has been down for the past month or so, so I can't reference you to that info.

I've been thinking about building a 210/115 ported cab for use with the Peavey, however. Let me know how things work out for you with your 212!
