New pedal, need help

Post by Progrockabuse »

hello my fellow shortscalers.

today, Chisa was the good fellow he is and sent me his CE-3 chorus pedal in trade for the mudhoney.

great analogue chorus sound, but i've got a problem.

i'm getting a lot of hiss and clock noise coming out of the pedal when it's on. it's quite noticeable. Chisa hasn't had any problems with it, so something odd must be happening my end.

i've used it both on batteries and mains..no change
in daisy chain with TU-2..no change
with both clean sounds and dirty sounds..no change
with other pedals in line and just the chorus on it's own..no change

ideas?
could something have knocked out of place in transit or something? boss pedals are like tanks and it was packed well so probably not.

My one spot used to do stuff like that to pedals, but sounds like you've tried umpteen power sources. I'd suggest sending it back, and if it's still ropey for Chisa powering it like he was before, he can claim on the postal insurance.

Hmmm

Sounds strange. Clock noise is weird, generally power wouldn't sort that, maybe a cap has finally died and gone bad. That should be filtered out of the power rails by filter caps by the LFO. I'm sure they will have designed that in.

I doubt you'll be able to get rid with power supply changes.

did the package look like it had been thrown around when you got it?

nope, package looked fine. and you'd wrapped it really well.

if something like a cap has gone, is it fixable?

i wouldn't think it would be a cap or anything (but mike probably knows more about this) as it was working on tuesday evening before it was packed up to send off. this is what the inside looked like when i had it, see if anything is out of place:

i reckon you are getting interference from somewhere either a TV or an aerial cable, or something like that

oh idea!

take the back off and make sure that the thin clear plastic cover between the circuit board and the base of the pedal is in the right place and insulating any connection.

When the backplate is off? Is there a clear plastic screen/cover between the circuit board and back cover?

Rob, i've had a few CE-3s in my time.. bring it down here. It may be sensitive to something in your room, we'll try it out.

I doubt there is anything wrong with it to be honest. Pedals do pick up noise although Boss usually dont. We'll sort it dude ;)
