and thinking of buying one of these...
waste of money or good investment? I wanna use them to record and live shows...

Definitely a good investment - a high-quality active direct box is an indispensable tool.
For recording and connectivity, there's nothing as nice as having a magical little box that will let you plug whatever into whatever else and get the volume right.
