Second guitar: thoughts?

Post by BacchusJim »

It may not be my main instrument, but I'm getting very annoyed retuning my one guitar, an Ibanez GAX30. No complaints at all about it, but I wouldn't mind something different. Down to a shortlist of two at the moment: either an Ibanez Jet King of some kind, or an Epiphone Wlishere. Both very nice; in my view the Jet king looks better, but the Epiphone sounds dirty as fuck. Ideas? Alternatives? Was thinking just over £200, 24.75" neck for preference.

Jet king by a fucking mile.

I don't know what they go for over there, but see if you can find a squier master series in your price range. The M-80, Master Telecaster or Master Strat. 24.75" set neck (FABULOUS NECKS) SD JB in bridge and Jass in neck. The m-80 is basswood, the others are mahogony. Beautiful instruments and probably the best quality squier has EVER put out. They play and sound fantastic, and the hardware is all good quality.

I got my M-80 for $140 US, and it's easily my go to guitar. So good that I ended up selling my Gibson LP because the M-80 just put it to shame.

HA!

This was more or less my exact response when Jim asked me about this.

Jim, the M-80 would be like the guitar equivalent of your bass, so it'd be like a complete set.

I have black but the transparent red is very nice. It's not shown but they also made brownish transparent one, much much darker than the amber.

I like black. Was the brown not a satin, walnuttey finish?

Is this one of the Squiers where they kept changing the inlays every so often? Are there M-80's where the blocks extend to the edge of the fretboard?

you should get an Ibanez GAX70 or AX120. or if that's too close to your old guitar you should get one the GFS Offset Guitars.

Not sure about those offsets. I can't see Jim getting on well with anything with switches or a tremolo. He's a simple sort.

I've thought of something else: take a look around all the Cash Converter type places there, and buy a hardtail super strat of some description. It'll look awful, but you'll get change of 200 quid, you'll have something a bit different (HSS pickups), and you could end up with something very solidly built.

no trem and only your standard 3-way here

the jagmaster style ones you can just crank the trem down and forget about it.

i love the m80 but i never bought one because i always strum my guitar right at the butt of the neck. having a toggley right there would never work for me.

i love the neck on them though.

ESP makes a guitar called the hybrid that actually comes with a real JB in it though. you should check it out....its built around the same body style as the epiphones.

There are M-80's that have no inlays, and a bolt on neck. They also have cheaper hardware and don't have SD humbuckers. I'd advise not getting those. Definitely stick with the set neck model, and the brown was a walnutty satin finish.

Way to be a stickler, Duncan Designed JB clone and Jazz clone.

I've played my DD JB side by side with a SD JB, and they sound identical.

GAX 70's are well nice for the monies, or even the 75 model with Drop D switch.
Theres always the good old Jagmaster, i'd trust it over the Jet King and GFS stuff anyday.

Good points, these.
I'd be all over Mage's tele thing if the shipping to the UK wasn't so ridiculous. Wouldn't be fucked with anything other than a hardtail or through-strung jobby. Switches I don't mind, but I prefer my guitar idiot-proof. If it's overly complicated it's only going to get broke.
Paul has a Jagmaster, and aside from the fact that he's called dibs on it I never liked the neck on those things. I'm a hamfisted type. The ESP would've been perfect, but for the slightly inflated price.
There's an M-80 going on Ebay I'll be keeping an eye on. Other than that the superstrat idea's not bad. Just a matter of finding a functional one.
