Cabinets

This topic can be debated until the end of time, but im just interested, what kind of cabinets do people use with their amp heads? I have been looking into maybe going a head and cab route for my next amp and wanted to know what people use or what you would recommend. It would be a fender head if that changes your answer at all. I would like to go for a really good 2X12 I think, but if there is an amazing 4X12 cabinet then im all about it. I would like to keep it in the price range of $500 at max. Used is fine.

Since you are in US, go Avatar 2x12 cabinet with a greenback and V30.

They are about 350 US and are great cabinets for the $. I see them come up used for in the 200 neighborhood. I have had a 2x12 and played through both the 1x12 and 4x12.

Mine did not have the v30/greenback though, it had emminence Tonkers because i was running a low wattage head and did nto want speaker breakup. The tonkers gave it a bit more headroom and crisper sound. Maybe not quite as warm, but I could dial that in with EQ and guitar.

Agreed, Avatar seems the best bet and is used widely from gear snobs to garagebands from what I've seen.

I can find bandmaster and bassman cabs (silverface) fairly regularly for under 300 easy. If i have a litle time on my hands to shop, I can get a old bandmaster or bassman head and cab for under 700 or 800.

I'm looking to do the same before too long. I'm playing an old Line 6 cabinet and its holding up nicely, its well constructed and the speakers are worn in pretty well so i'm satisfied. I'll eventually hunt down a 2x12 bandmaster cabinet with jbl's or something similar
or put a Greenback/V30 in the Line 6. maybe even replace the grille cloth and put a fender decal on for kicks

I have been looking at avatar cabs a lot. I was just wondering if they were really up to all the hype.

compared to almost double that for a new marshall with similiar speakers, hell yeah.

Personally I'd go for them over an older silverface bassman/bandmaster head as well, but as far as $ goes, they may be a little cheaper and also easier to flip if ever needed.

What kind of Oms should I go for? Still kinda confused on that stuff. The amp I would be getting can do 4 8 and 16 so how should I run it?

As I understand it, the ohmage doesn't matter as long as it matches? I know on solid states you can run it at a diffrent ohmage at half power, or what not, but I think it's different for tube.

do different ohms dictate headroom a little? What would give me the most head room, if that even has an effect on it.

I'd choose a 2x12 over most configs, if space/transporting it isn't an issue.

I've heard a few people say the lower the impedance (of the cab AND head), the louder the setup is. I'm not one of them- it's got far more to do with speaker impedance, and even having a decent speaker cable.

Just match the impedance for best headroom, most tube heads have a switchable load output, or have totally separate outputs for 4, 8 or 16 ohm cabs.

100 Watts 4Ohms.

technically that's true yea, and the fidelity also goes down. if you have 100w amp rated for 16ohms and a 100w amp rated for 4ohms, the 4 ohms will be louder. 16ohms will be higher fidelity.

the formula for the output difference is in the yamaha sound reinforcement handbook.

Get an 8ohm Avatar 2x12! Set your head for 8ohms.

That way if you want to add another cab, you'll have no trouble finding another 8ohm (very common). You then set your head to 4 ohms to use both cabs.
This is the most flexible solution.

I am LOVING V30s mixed with Eminence Cannabis Rex. Both those speakers requires some serious break in, but once its done, you got all the cutting snap and bite from the V30s and the smokey growl of the cannabis.

I'll bet Avatar will mix and match whatever you want, though you won't get the "special" price which is reserved for the most common combos.

avatar charges a bunch more for emminence speakers. They order the celestions in bulk so that is what all their cabs come with stock. You pay quite a premium for other speakers. At least that is how they used to be.

Too bad as the Cannabis Rex is only like $75 new normally.
