i've been hankering after a les paul, really like using one for heavier rock sounds.
seen a burny lemon drop les paul in my local shop, though put off by the £699 price tag.
people got any thoughts on them?

i'm really thinking of getting some kinda les paul style thing. something a little more solid than the goldtop. not that there's anything wrong with it, but i fancy something with a P90 in the neck and a full size humbucker in the bridge. like a BFG. but not as rough looking.
they had a love rock, but don't know what it was like. think it was one of the cheaper newer ones.

I know what you mean. Once every blue moon i get that 'i might get Les Paul' feeling, but i know it would be a waste of money. I got offered an early 70s Gibson LP Standard not long ago for £450, i considered buying it as an investment but i knew it was 'hot' and i dont agree with that kind of thing.
All my gear is Fender based except the Tokai V, i do miss not having something else along the lines of a Gibson. Too bad i sold two Westburys, the Yamaha SG and Gordon Smith gs1.

Having a Gibson style around is certainly worth while, especially if you are playing rock / hard rock. When you go to double track that "chugga chugga" rhythm part, you'll be happy.
I'd recommend a used USA Hamer. They go for like 1/4 of the new price and they are absolutely top quality, hand made, etc etc.
Find an 80s "Studio" which is the same body as a LP jr (double cut). They have the sound and feel even if the headstock is wrong.

i like the hamer stuff, just don't like the way they mount their pots in a straight line.

I'll have another look and give it a proper once over if you want. I might do so anyway, just to learn a bit about Tokais.
It looked really clean, though, so maybe it wasn't old. There is a shop here in Belfast that sells new Tokais, so it's quite possible it was from there originally.
I'll call in tomorrow if I'm not working all day.
