speaker swap vs. ext. cab.

I have a 60 watt Blues Deville 2x12, I like the amp but would like to have more bass response and less speaker breakup. I am wondering if I can get to where I want by either changing the speakers to a higher wattage or adding an extension cab. Probably a 1x15. As it is my amp tends to get quite muddy, especially when I am using massive amounts of fuzz paired with my Boss OC-2. Instead of Hammer of the Gods it sounds a bit more like divine flatulence.

Not familiar with that amp but i had the same complaint with my Marshall combo. Putting it through a 4x12 made it a completely different amp as far as low end was concerned, i doubt changing the speaker will get you significantly more low end but it will probably address the other problem.

The speaker breakup is a minor complaint really. I like it sometimes and other times I don't but I'm not really willing to spend money to adress only that issue. The low end response is my main concern. I've been playing through a borrowed Twin RI and I love the low end with the various fuzzes and octaves and I know that when I go back to playing my amp that I'll have been spoiled and will no longer tolerate fart bass. Hopefully a 1x15 will do the trick, I'm running out of room in my van and a 4x12 would mean that I would have to kick drummer out of the band.

Think we have the same problems. I have a blues deluxe, which is the same line of amps as yours. They tend to be very bright and a tad harsh sounding.
I've thought about changing the speaker of or getting an exstention cab, but i think I'll end up getting a less bright amp with better low end and midrange.

The Deville is really not harsh at all, it just tends to be muddy in the low end of things. I can't feel the bass like I can through a Twin or something similar. Again, this is with a heavily affected sound. Epi Wildcat-Big Muff-Shiva-Boss OC-2-amp. I really like the clean signal I get through it. It very well may be that a Bassman or something similar is more suited to my sound, but I gots no monies for that shit. Thanks for the input. I may get an ext. cab just for the looks even if it doesn't completely solve the problem.

I'd definitely try a 2x12 extension cab, especially if you are generally happy with the amp.

This is the reason I my Combo experiment failed. I tried a bunch of Combo amps but always came back to one thing - a Head and a 2x12". It's just how I like my guitar to sound - big, projected and with plenty of thunk in the low-end.

I was trying to slimline my setup and spare my poor back, but y'know what? I quit fighting it, because this works for me.

i have had about 10 diff combo amps and they were all pretty nice.
peavey, marshall, fender, ampeg. etc etc.
but my fav is my bassman head with 2x12 closed back cab.
i do actually like my bassman ten which is kinda like a combo amp

Yeah, then I have the problem of obtaining 400 bucks. Not much call for male prostitutes in the middle of Kansas.

I really would prefer a head/cab setup, so many more options. I'm just a tight-ass with $$. If I could get a bassman and 2x12 for $800 or so I would do it, provided someone was willing to buy my ratty old amp. Or I could take a saw to the Deville and make it a head and build a 2x12 cab. Thanks for the advice.

You could try fitted a couple of Celestion Vintage 30's into your amp. I put one in my Hot Rod Deluxe and it now has a really great sounding full bottom end which I really love. Now whenever I use anyone else's amp they I always think they sound really tinny with no balls. I've been complemented numerous times by sound engineers and other guitarists who've used my amp over the quality of it's sound. It should be cheaper than buying a whole cab with decent speakers as well.

I may swap the speakers, but an extra cab is gonna happen first. I could build one quite easily. I need my rig to be a little more visually ominous.
