Line6 toneport. Not too expensive, easy to use. Comes with its own amp-modelling software which is pretty cool too.

I'm using an Edirol UA-25EX with my macbook. More expensive but it's much better quality, better mic preamps i think, has more controls and stuff.

If all you need is a USB based AD converter (e.g., you don't need builtin pre's or any other crap), check out the M-Audio Transit. It's cheap and the converters are reportedly pretty decent. You'd need a little combiner from Ratshack or someplace else to get from mixer outputs (presumably 2 x 1/4-in) down to 1/8-in stereo plug; but from there you're good to go.

yeah there's only a guitar image on the input but it takes a mic, i was wrong saying it doesn't work with a mic, i've used it with a mic lots of times so i've no idea why i said it doesn't work. lol it's cheap and handy, not many options it's simple, but i have an m audio firewire solo and that one glitches lots when i use it i haven't used it in ages.

You would connect the outputs from your mixer to it. What mixer are you using? The one on your tape machine?

no.

well maybe.

if your mixer has an out for each track and you're prepared to splash on a usb interface with 8 inputs then yes. otherwise you'll be using the mixer's normal output and just plugging that into a usb interface, so you'll have one stereo track and you'll have to set the levels of the tracks and stuff on the mixer before recording because what you'll get on the PC is effectively a mix down of those 8 tracks.

How many channels do want into the computer Gabe? USB interfaces top out at around 4 as far as I know. More than that you need to look at FireWire. If 2 is cool you can get adapters for your RCA outputs--either straight to an 1/8-in stereo plug or transition to two 1/4-in outputs first. He'll, tell me when you pull the trigger and I'll get you the necessary adapters; I owe you a Pinwheels CD in any case.
