It looks rubbish, and it's a terrible name, but it also looks like it'd be a good amp.

I think Mesa get a bad reputation because people use their amps to sound shit. With old Fender and Marshall amps it's difficult to make the amp sound bad,but it's also difficult to get it to sound like much other than an old Fender or Marshall. Through being versatile people manage to sound like a bag of spanners through Mesa amps, so with the line of reasoning people have for the old Fender and Marshall stuff, people assume that's the natural sound of the amps.

Would be a a hell of a lot better than a RI Bassman at €1299

Its true that a lot of wankers use mesas to sound like wankers but they do sound good, no doubt about it in my mind. Some of my favourite amps are mesas, particularly the Tremoverb

yeah I was buying the bassman because, at the time, I was going to be playing guitar and bass live in the same band and I didn't want to carry around two amps. Although most people use a bassman for guitar, I contacted Fender and they said it would be no problem playing a bass through it, but they recommended I buy a Bassman TV as it would "sound better". As I would only be playing bass on one third the songs I thought the bassman would be the way to go.

There are plenty of simple £250ish all tube amps should you want one:

Orange Tiny Terror
Vox Night Train
Epiphone Valve Junior
Bugera V5
Marshall Class 5
Laney Lionheart
VHT Special 6

That VHT is likely to be shite, Fryette took the majority of his designs with him + didn't have any input on that amp at all (might as well be called Gorilla Special 6) and the build quality is going to be weak. Vox Night Train or TT for the win.

From what I've heard in a brief video it has a nice clean sound, but I haven't seen or played one in person. Personally I have never been a fan of the way their amps respond to pick attack.

Whenever I see a night train, all I can think about is Axl Rose singing that song... and I hate Axl Rose.

If you're still after a bassman, buying a RI is a bit crazy when a silverface can be had for so little money. Even the blackface ones aren't extortionate, youcould pick one up for less than €1300 for sure.
