speaker wattages

Post by Progrockabuse »

just about to bite the bullet and stick a new speaker in my blues deluxe. never done this before, but seems straight forward.

my question is, will it be ok to use a celestion vintage 30 watt with my 40 watt blues deluxe. or should i go for something higher wattage for better headroom.

something higher. it's not so much headroom that's the problem. a 30 watt speaker is just not rated to operate at 40 watts so there's a possibility it could fail.

I put a Vintage 30 in my Hot Rod Deluxe and haven't had any problems, but then I don't think i've ever taken the volume past 3 and it goes up to 12.

Do you mean a "Vintage 30" speaker? Because they are rated at 60W, or another 30W vintage celestion of some sort?

When I fitted mine it sounded fine from the off, but then I was replacing the stock speaker that I thought sounded like poo. It does however sound better the more you play it at volume. Take it to band practice and crank up loud for a few weeks, if your band complain about the volume tell them it's necessary to run the speaker in and to get over it.

No worries.
Lots of clean open chords at decent volume to get the cone moving is what I have heard.
If you have a looper pedal all the better - just leave it running for a bit.
It shouldn't sound awful to start with but might be a bit brittle. A few good long band practices and you'll be there.

that happens a lot at band practise. my blues deluxe cuts through anything. hoping the extra headroom will help with the clean channel. the strat tends to get it to break up a little around 3/4.

the brittleness i can live with, if it gives way to nice full sounding fenderness.

you can get 'em already broken in from avatar . they also have regular celestions cheaper than most places.

Always replace a speaker with one rated above the output RMS of the amp. So, if the amp puts out 60 watts RMS, I'd put a 75 or 100 watter in there. If you put a 200 watter in there it won't get driven enough to really make it talk.
