As long as you wipe off any excess it's fine.
I've personally left it on for over an hour in certain cases where the wood was ash-dry - sometimes I've done a couple of 15 min sessions on one....I don't think you can fuck it up. Once a nut did pop off a rickenbacker ... I've read that sometimes frets can sprout out if the wood expands greatly. It's crazy too see how much actually gets absorbed in extreme cases. Mind you i am talking about raw linseed oil/turps mix. I've never been a fan of lemon oils for anything other than cleaning. Just a personal preference really rather than a comment on the performance. What are you using?

I love the Dean Markley Love Potion #15. It is the best stuff I've tried. Second to that is Dunlops Fingerboard Conditioner. I work on guitars for a living, so, you can either take my advice or not. Usually an hour with #15 for very dried out necks is plenty. I would do it for that, then make sure you reapply it with evey string change until you are happy with it. When I say string change, I mean minimum once a month if you play much at all, and more frequently if you play a lot.
