Its not like completely nu-metal scooped, just a slight scoop.

I'm going to be posting some samples of my setup in a sec. I'm nervous as doing demos I always get nervous knowing its being recorded and my playing gets fucked up but whatever.
Lol, at least you know how to play. I've just been mashing strings for a year.

Mid scoop does not have to equal nu-metal. I scoop my mids. In my mind I'm going for early Page Hamilton (Strap it on era) but less compressed and more out of control. If only I could play like him...

i play with my bass at 6 my mids at 2 and my treble at 10.. and then rock a russian big muff.. with the volume equal to the amp, sustain at 10 o'clock and tone at about 9 o'clock..
i'm trying to pull a harsh version of d. boons sound in the minutemen.

not quite qhat you are after at all.. but the same setup can provide a wide variation of tone, depending upon where you toss your dials.

Yeah, not really. I suck.
http://bestnetworx.com/uploader/files/13/Rat_Sample.mp3

The first distorted parts are that custom Rat I mentioned, later its my stock 86 Rat, you can tell cuz it has more edge to it. Then at some point you hear them both at the same time, cuz it's massively distorted.

Yeah, I know my playin sucks on this. I get nervous when I do demos and just sort of play shit at random and don't know what to do. It's more about hearing the sound.

Which the sound is not exactly how it sounds standing there, I close mic'd the Twin so you ain't hearing the room reverb and whatnot, but bleh. Here it is.

Hate all you want.

this. Everytime one of you donks go off on how much you suck I just wanna slap you. 99% of you guys have skills and technique I would sell my soul for.
Especially yours, you essentially play the way I want to play.

Thanks dude. I was using a Dano TOD for my OD sound, then fixed up the custom Rat to give to my bass player, but when I rehoused it and such I started playing it again and was like DUUUUUDE no I'm using this. So that custom Rat took the place of the TOD.

Amp settings for reference are 7-5-7 High-Mid-Low. You don't want to completely scoop them out as you need some to cut through the drums but still you gotta keep them low.

That is my Fender Twin, I also have a Bassman-clone Univox head which also sounds great, but my drummer is a fucking beast and it isn't loud enough to keep up with him.

Fuck even the Twin I gotta crank at shows to be heard.

Nu-Metal would be setting the mids at 0 and then growing a stupid haircut and only playing the low E string.

eff that. I live in drop d. I don't know why I bother to keep any of my guitars in any other tuning.

Back on subject... I really think this dude should stick with his current amp and play with his pedal options. I think he can pretty much nail the tone he's after in under $200. Maybe a new cab, but he should definitely be well on his way to rock sub $800.

i can never find anything fun to do in drop D.
sometimes it's fun to play pop in drop d, just cause the sound is unexpected, but the novelty wears off pretty soon.
of course, i think you and i play very different music.
but, even for metal, i prefer regular tuning, or maybe tuned down a half step.

i always have at least one guitar in drop C.
i also lower my mids.

it's made for post metal.

i've always found the nu-metal sound to be more mid heavy than anything else. add a ton of mids, no bass and piercing highs and you're well on your way to being a total cock.

Uh, crushing low end more than anything, for nu-metal. Loads of bass, no mids, and a dollop of treble.

I don't care what anyone says, I used to love playing in my room with that sound, but it never works with a band. It gets completely lost.

Bass - 8
mids - 2
treble - 10

That's how I roll.

Different to me - I spent a few years in drop D exclusive because I could play melodies over one finger bar-chords easier and this was in a pansy sebadoh type style initially. Nowt to do with Metal but more filling out a band without needing a second guitarist. Unless you're an adept fingerstyler like Bert Jansch or Nick Drake drop D makes that kind of thing so much easier and natural to pull off, especially with some dirt in the sound. That were my experience anyway.

Ah yes that was me being dumb.

Don't get me wrong, I used to absolutely love playing through a little 15 watt Marshall MG with that sound.
Then I got a bit more knowledge and stopped liking it. Ignorance is bliss in some ways.

I'm about to get some bashing here for my ignorance, but...

I've never listened to Shellac, or any of Albini's bands. He seems to be popping up in more and more threads around here, and it sounds like he's got some awesome music out there. Can anyone suggest/send a good album to start off with for me?

My Black Ass and Boche's Dick are still my absolute favorite Shellac songs, the riffs are just brain crushing.
