Supersonic WEIRD BUZZ SOUND ON B STRANG
Moderated By: mods
I appreciate what you are trying to do here, but...othomas2 wrote:That does sound like strings bouncing off the frets, masking tape present or not.
I would say frets are uneven, wherever it's hitting its creating that harmonic buzzing noise, it doesn't necessarily have to hit metal to make a metallic type noise. I hear it so often on Epiphone guitars that come through the shop I work in. Use a credit card and check there's no rocking on the frets.
Other than that:
Badly cut nut
Bridge too low or rattling... grub screw(s) ?
Neck is too straight and needs some more relief
tuners / string tree
I really don't reckon that's a truss rod issue... it wouldn't be so audible through the amp IMO
I know you've gone down these avenues and disregarded most of them as being a problem, but I'm just thinking out aloud here.
I replaced the nut. With a BLANK. Uncut. so the string could not possibly be hitting a fret. Still there
I filled the cut nut slot to the top, did not recut it. Still there.
Replaced the bridge and set the action so high you could skydive off of it. Still there.
Loosened the truss rod. Still there.
Tuners I suppose are possible. But when I've encountered loose tuners before, I could put my fingers on them and kill the buzz. I cannot isolate any of them as buzzing.
I could replace the tuners completely, but that's like $50 to shell out, and if the problem is still there, I have a set of tuners that I can't resell (lefty tuners have no resale)
Unless I get some other, better ideas, I guess I'll try the glue down the neck thing as that is free. As mentioned in the article linked, thin glue will have it's bond easily broken so I'm not concerned about seizing up the truss rod.

Really, you should just bring it into a guitar shop (not a big box place) and see what they have to say. "Like, check out what this guitar is doing, what is up with that?" They have probably seen the problem 100 times before and will give you the run down of what has to be done. If you don't want them to do the work, get the gear from them that will be needed to do it. Most of the guitar repair guys that I have had dealing with are really cool about this kind of thing.
Short of seeing it in person I'm sure it's the truss. It not unlikely at all for the sound to come through the pickups partcuarly as it's probably unshielded, un wax potted and mebbe microphonic. See also comment on syd Barrett rolling a metal bearing up and down the truss cavity because it did make a sound.
Do an glue. I really don't think you'll break anything. Read that article and I'd probably just water down some White PVA or wood glue enough to squirt out of a syringe. Try a light application, let it dry, test and repeat. It might be enough just to coat the Walls of the cavity to muffle the contact. That glue isn't so hard it's going fuck the truss up and should not stick hard to the metal.
Take action dude, it's not cursed, just need to try something out that won't harm the thing even if it doesn't fix. DEWWWWWW EEEEEEETTTTTT!

It might take longer but you could in small amounts before testing each time. I think the only thing that article said to watch out for is getting in the threads of the adjustment bit. Fingers crossed for you dude, hope it works out.Pens wrote:I will be watering down some wood glue and trying that. I am a bit scared but fuck it. I can't live with this buzzing.

Jesus fucking christ.
Fuck y'all. Really.
Aside from a small handful of non-regulars whom I had really never known before, y'all have been as useful as color television to a blind man.
Yeah, I changed the fucking strings. Smartass.
I put up a fucking clip of this shit through a direct box, that wasn't mic'd. That is what it sounds like coming straight from the pickups.
I ran thinned out wood glue down the truss from the heel. I'm going to wait for that to dry. I also wrapped the G string tuning key, which was the only loose one after I resat them all, with tape so it doesn't move.
I'll post results of the glue trick so the knowledge of this shit gets saved, in our Knowledge forums. This isn't me asking for getting a goddamn tone, this is a technical issue that if I can fix, will save others that search for it the pain of dealing with you sluts.
Personal insults about "sorting my life" are pretty much fucking uncalled for in this section. My life is pretty goddamn fine right now, thanks. There's also nothing wrong with my sense of humor. I just don't see anything funny about pretending that I'm fucking stupid when I'm actually trying to solve a problem. It adds nothing, zero, to a thread in the Knowledge section.
Thanks to those that actually posted logical suggestions. Appreciated the help.

There was nothing smart about my suggestion. Thom even said he had experienced the same issue. You're coming off pretty badly here, it seems you can neither take a joke when people talk in jest, nor well intentioned advice. Good luck with getting it fixed. I was posting nothing more than a suggestion.Pens wrote:Jesus fucking christ.

Bullshit. All you in particular have posted in this thread have been smart ass "Turn your amp up, pussy" and "didn't you actually play the thing before you bought it?!" as if I'm a fucking retard.Mike wrote:There was nothing smart about my suggestion. When I start a thread and post in the beginning the level of troubleshooting I have done on this thing, including mentioning having strings break, don't you think I would have already done string changes on it? I said in the very first post that strings broke, implying that I've changed the fucking things. This entire thread you have be a complete and total smartass to me and insulted my intelligence.
I don't give a fuck how I'm coming off. When I've fielded a constant barrage from several of you this whole time of killing myself, "just burn it", "just play it you pussy", "change the nut again, I don't care if you've already done three in total on this thing, you must be an idiot who can't fucking install a nut", yeah I'm getting goddamn irritated with the nonsense that is doing nothing to further this issue.
I don't mind jokes, however insulting my intelligence is pretty much the quickest way to piss me the fuck off, and after knowing you for 4 years, Mike, you ought to know that by now.
What makes me the most angry is this is only about the second or third time in my entire 4 years here that I've been in a position requiring help and have asked the board about a problem with a guitar, as this is the first "new" guitar I've bought since this board started, and if this is how most new people are treated, well fuck I suddenly understand what some people mean now about how harsh we are to new people. I had never seen it because I don't get into these threads that often.
It's a different thing to talk shit about someones Tubescreamer, because I'm insulting his gear, not the person or their intelligence. You and a few others have been directly personal in your insults and honestly its really uncalled for. This shit doesn't belong in the knowledge forums. I'll deal with any jokes about my personal life and character in the Pub where they belong.

You should probably get over it. Life is short.
I made a couple of jokey comments and then stayed away for quite a while to be honest. Then I thought of the strings thing. I don't particularly care if you're going to be a baby about that comment because I know I meant it sincerely and that's all that matters.
No malice was intended by anyone. If you truly thought there was I don't know why you would continue to post here.

Because you aren't the only person here and there's a lot of worthwhile people here other than you?Mike wrote:You should probably get over it. Life is short.

I gave up a while back ever trying to get back to being friends with you after your repeated snubs, and I'm still here, so obviously I remain because I have other friends here.
As far as being a baby, this must be one of them fucked up Brit translation things where baby = someone who calls you out for being a constant prick to everyone? Kinda like how y'all mispronounce solder.
