if it's from 78 it won't have a date on the heel. or rather, it'll have a numbered code that can be deciphered to give you the date, but you'll need to look up the method of doing it, as it isn't immediately apparent.

Haze, are you for sure going after it?

If not, would you consider getting it for me? I am building a Shortscale and need a neck. I could Paypal you the money.

That sounds good. For $50, some shortscaler needed to get it. I am still kicking myself for selling my Vista Series Jagmaster neck. I could really use it right now.

I think it's S XXXXXX. S = seventies. the first X = year of the decade.

that's the serial number on the headstock. there should be a heel stamp with a seperate code, decipherable like so:
1972 to 1980 Neck Stamps Explained.
This information was provided by Greg Gagliano. The 1972-1980 eight digit code is similar to the previous 1969-1971 system. Example, Music Master (s/n 595121) with code 49002153. The first 6 digits are paired off and the last two digits are taken singly. So that gives us 49 00 215 3 where:

49 = model code (Musicmaster, Mustang, Bronco)
00 = neck code (rosewood fingerboard)
21 = week code (week 21)
5 = year code (1975)
3 = day of the week code (Wednesday)

Model Codes Used from 1972 to 1980.

Model codes (first pair of digits):
01 = Precision Bass
02 = Jazz Bass
04 = Mustang Bass
08 = Telecaster Deluxe
09 = Stratocaster
13 = Telecaster, Telecaster Custom, Telecaster Thinline
49 = Musicmaster, Mustang, Bronco

Picked it up, the guy i bought it from had a Musicmaster he had bought at a pawn shop ten years ago. He was selling the neck because he wanted a full scale neck on it. Pickup routes were routed all to hell as usual, but he had filled it with oak. The bridge was also plugged up and he was ready to move it. He was keeping the musicmaster setup on it though!

neck looks good, definitely been played for the last 30 years! Frets are worn but are still playable, nut looks original but the low e looks really low cut.

Funny thing is that it takes F tuners [10mm] and i JUST traded my set off for a set of Klusons! DOH!

heres some iphone pics, i'll get the SLR out later tonight

there is a small chip he made when he took out the ferrules

They also changed the decal to one word in 76, still it only gives a four year span accuracy.
For what its worth, i had a 76 and 78 MM back in the day and them necks were amongst some of the best i've ever played. I miss them tbh.

The neck feels really good just holding it. It's a smidge thinner than my jag hh neck.
I think I'll try and find a musicmaster body and go from there

I am definitely jealous, but I am glad that another Shortscaler was there to save another vintage shortscale neck from demise. Is that tape near one of the tuner holes?
