Jaguar Pickups - info please

Nah nah.

CP = hot single coils like 1/4 Pounders

My original '66 Jaguar has weaker (old) pickups like Antiquities.

Hmmm, that's cool to know. I remember when I put Quarter Pounders in that Jag I had waaayy back when (an '89 or '90 Japanese reissue). I remember how dinky the original pickups (which I still have, stored in a box [that I can't find]). They were so light, and had such small magnets, and so few windings, compared to the Quarter Pounders. With the Quarter Pounders installed, that old Jag sounded SO brutal at high gain - IMO, it could easily do metal, with them installed. I wish I'd known what to do back then, to solve my microphonics problem, I wouldn't have gotten rid of it.

I've only found the claws of the pickups to be a result of microphonic feedback, nothing else... that completely rectified the issues I was having.

Yup - but I didn't learn that until somebody told me on this forum last year. And you know what's funny? - when I put the Quarter Pounders in my old Jag, I actually considered leaving the claws off, but decided to keep them on the mounts because:

A. I thought they looked cool
B. I thought they would help with shielding from electrical noise.

I tell you, I just about pulled my hair out trying to figure out while the thing was so squealy at anything other than lounge jazz gain levels.

OK guys 2 cents worth time: Ah gots the first of muh Income tax refunds in the mail today. Soooooooo, it's put up or shut up time tomorrow for a Jag. I'm thinking seriously about three different Jags. Things sure have changed Jaguar-wise over the past few years - you can choose from different models, unlike when I had my last one. Could you give me your opinions on them?:

1. This little honey on evilBay. It kind of reminds me of my old Olympic White Jag I had 20 years ago. It's been modded with Duncan SJAG-1s, and new pots, and caps. The only el- lame-o thing, is that the guy wants to ship it with the neck unbolted to save on shipping (or else charge extra for addtional packaging to ship it assembled). With 2 days to go, it's at $366 bid-wise.

2. Classic Player Jaguar Special - tune-o-matics are cool, and the issue of retrofitting hotter pickups is already taken care of.

3. '66 Classic Jaguar - looks cool. Also, I can't find any listing for it as a present model on Fender's website, whether this is due to it being a limited edition, or being discontinued, either way, it's rarer than some of the other Jag models, which is cool in my book.

Being a nice girl, and because they've given me good deals and good service over the past few years, and have recently become a regular Fender Dealer, (not just a Fender Custom Shop dealer, like they've been for the past few years), I'm thinking of throwing my business to a local shop, if I choose Option 2 or Option 3.

Try and play 2 and 3 if you can, they're very different riffs on the same theme.

The ebay one I wouldn't worry about - neckwise, it's actually a pretty smart way to ship guitars.

Personally I would go for the white one on eBay if it stays low enough - I like white Jags. And the neck thing doesn't matter - you can just screw it back on very easily! I like a vintage radius on Fenders and I've never really been a fan of block inlays (though I seem to be in the minority).
Love my Japanese Jag and am actually about to have my original pickups rewound after having swapped them out for P90s a few years ago.

Yeah, reinstalling a neck on a guitar is peanuts. As for trying out a Classic Player Special, or '66 Reissue - that's a problem around here Mike. There's not much in the way of Jags in my neck of the woods (the Milwaukee Metro area), where Fenders to be found are usually Strats & Teles, with the occasional MIC Jagmaster. But, I did check a short time ago on Warp Drive Music's website (they occasionally post VERY expensive vintage guitars on eBay), and they have a couple of '66 Reissues, and a real deal '69 that they're asking way more than I can afford. Their brick and mortar side (Cream City Music), is the shop I was alluding to above. I could ask Brian to let me give the '66 Reissues a spin (since I can't afford the '69, I'd prefer not to try it out). As for the Classic Player Special - I'm out of luck. If I get one, I'll basically be taking a chance/gamble.

Yeah, I do miss Whitey (yes, I name my guitars). Re-bolting a naeck on a guitar is peanuts. But, I have a feeling that the price is going to go up a fair amount tomorrow (several people have already bid on the guitar,and there's a day and a half left in the bidding). Try and have a go of the Mexi CP series. I'd have a go myself, but I'm worried I'd like it too much.

Yeah, I'm kind of leaning towards the CP, due to its hotter pickups, and lower price. But, I'll probably still try out the '66 Reissue. After all, the possibility does exist that it will blow me away.

the cp jags are terrific. it seems to be one of the instances of fender actually listening to what most people are asking for and delivering in a moderately priced, quality re-work of an old instrument.

Wahoo!! I bought a Jag tonight after work! A 1966 Reissue! At Cream City/Warp Drive Music. The price tag said $900. I gave it a try through a Tiny Terror (I used to have one, before I had to sell it during a money crunch in late 2008), and it sounded really good. It had lots of chime, and snarled, when played at high gain levels. It also played great (it reminded me a lot of my old one). I asked how much a CP Special would cost me, and I was quoted $670 (it would have to be ordered), which is pretty good. But, even better - I was told that if I wanted the '66 Reissue, I could have it for $700. That was VERY intriguing to me, considering that they list for $1250. To make sure I was making the right choice, I tried out a couple of other Fenders that I have some interest in (a J Mascis Jazzmaster, and a '69 Thinline Reissue Tele). I then gave the '66 Reissue Jag another test drive. It sounded and played better for me than the other guitars. So, I said, "sold!"

I put $400 down on the Jag, to put it on layaway, until I get paid on Monday, when I'll pay it off (with sales tax, I owe $330). A free setup is included in the sale, so I'm having it set up for 12s, with a wound 3rd string. Yeahaa!!!

That's a SERIOUSLY good deal! Congratulations on the buy. I've always thought those '66 RIs were far overpriced just because of the neck but at that price it's a steal

Yup. Candy Apple Red. They wanted about $200 more for a Sunburst one they had. I think that they have an overstock of sorts of the Candy Apple Red ones, because I was offered the option to choose one that was still packed in its box. I declined that offer, deciding to stick with a known quantity - the one I tried out.

Yes, it was quite the steal. Even the price on the CP Special was good, but $700 (actually $730 with Wisconsin's excessive sales tax) for a '66 Reissue - I couldn't pass that up!
