Is this cab worth it?

Post by George »

A guy at my work's bandmate is selling a bunch of cool guitar stuff on the company's local intranet thingy. This 1 x 12 Fender style speaker cab caught my eye. As far as I know it's a plain no name open back cabinet. Regardless of the speaker which might be alright, is it worth the £30 knowing I'll probably need one some day and can upgrade the speaker? The guy informed me it's plywood but what quality I can't be sure.

I've yet to find out the speaker, doubt it's anythign special though.

I don't know prices over there, but 30 seems pretty cheap so probably worth it. But, if the speaker is total crap and you are going to have to replace it with a decent speaker, you may be able to find a better deal that already had a useable speaker in it.

can you take a head over and check it out?

if it's a shite speaker you could probably spend a little more and get much better.

go for it, it's hard to find an empty 1x12 for that much and the speaker could be good.

I'm yet to get a return email on the particular speaker etc and can't really have a good butchers cos its 60 odd miles away, but know he'll drop it off here. I think he just wants rid of it without faffing about because he sounds like a "wealthy middle aged guy with heaps of gear" type.

I may still get it with a duff speaker, as you say they're quite hard to come by for cheap. I hope the guy just doesn't know the value of the speaker.

I wish I knew how to build amps. Look at this little charmer....

This seems like a reasonably good deal. My brother once had the fortune to get a 2x12' Fender box for the equvalent of £ 43 ... he got double the money from selling the speakers alone after swapping them ... but I guess that was a once-in-a-lifetime deal.

Having finally spoken to the guy on the phone I've been able to find out it's actually made of fucking MDF and the speaker is some shitty old bass amp speaker. He was dead shifty as well - once I said MDF was no good he tried to sell me a fucking 2x12 foldback instead. Seriously, wtf.
