Any problems with new Squier Jagmaster ?

Post by NJjoanjettfan »

As the new owner of a recent production Jagmaster in excellent condition are there any problems endemic to the model that I should be aware of ?

Do the tuning machines hold tune well with no or limited gentle tremolo use ?

Are the post adequate for the humbuckers ? Are they 250K or 500K ?

Are the humbuckers 4/5 wire and capable of being coil split ?

Delivery is expected early this week if I need anything I'll want to get it ordered soon.

Had one, didn't like it.

The pots are 500k, but I disliked the humbuckers. Very dull sounding, I found them muddy and middy.
They are not 4/5 wire buckers, if you're looking for splitting replace them.
I'd listen to them first before replacing, but they didn't give me that sleezy grit(that I love) that cheapo humbuckers usually do.
Tuning machines were solid, I've never had anything but good luck with squier tuners as far as holding a tune. I rarely ride the trem though.

The neck didn't do it for me either, seemed oddly thin.

Sorry for the less than sparkling review, but Vista series Jagmasters these are not.

Joan Jett fucking rocks btw... :)

Thanks for the info. Saw her, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Nov of 08 in Morristown N.J. Previously in NYC at CBGB's and at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J. March 22, 1988 where I was up front & missed the white scarf even though I'm 6'3" it was over my head & outta reach but she winked & snapped a white Fender pick I snatched from the air. That got me the sly smile.

As for the Rondo, not to sure like the fender/squier tradition.

I have to tell you growing up just outside NYC (Bayonne, N.J.) working as a bus/diesel mechanic in the bus industry in the NJ/NYC metro area mostly in Staten Island after WTC in 93 and 2001 and losing ex-girlfriends, friends, classmates and a friends father in 93 attack I have a hard time getting past your Sol Alinsky inspired screen name. Don't think you've experienced being spit upon outside Hunter College (Berkley of the East) for wearing Nato issue field jacket and yellow/amber lensed sunglasses while being derided as a "war criminal" by members of the cult following the resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Do a store search for short scale. You may like what you see.

Screen name is the name of my first band back in the 90's.

Not many do. As a new member I have to be careful but I'm 46 and you name it I saw it, seen it all shooting victims etc....

Just want to get an idea as to what to expect now that I've been forced to switch guitar scales due to the actions of a heroin addict who ran me over with a car AFTER I crossed the street and stepped up on the opposite curb. I was run over from behind by a piece of mierda who subscribes to the "mantra" of the member who answered my inquiry above. He'll never get the message as I'm the second of three he's hit in the crosswalk.

Let see, how did the 22 yr old put it at the deposition ? Oh yeah, "I don't know what the big deal is he's still alive, why's he complaining?" Well a brain injury that hemoraged for five of the ten days I spent in neuro-intensive care, both wrists shattered, both thumbs dislocated, three fractures across my shoulders, lower back which was already surgically repaired, now severely damaged all prior work a waste and right ear mangled. I have headaches, lose my peripheral vision, left wrist and right thumb still need surgery as does my ear (which will be last) and physical therapy is grueling.

Yeah but guess who's bumper sticker is on the back of the car ? You guessed it. In and out of jail since he was 13 yet he's out again after being convicted of multiple stolen credit card charges and heroin possession in no less than four towns. But hey "he's entitled to numerous chances after all it ain't(sic) his fault he's an addict" (and a dou(hb@g)

One other thing on his webpage he's posed with a B.C. Rich Warlock guitar, well you can guess where this 6'3" 200lb former bodybuilder (& NYPD candidate) would like to shove that pointed headstock. BTW his old band is "Losers Will Prevail", I can promise you in my case he won't.

no prob, gotta help the bros when I can,

but back on topic,

The tuners are decent, they hold their tune if the strings are stretched enough

The pots aren't horrible, but some aftermarket 500k's could help your toen a bit.

And ends covered the 4/5 wire question.

Cheers

It's gonna be a adjustment I need to make since I have long arms and average sized hands, no long fingers here. I hope it'll work as it's extremely painful after the 7th-12 fret stretch required for fretting some double stops and power chords.

I'll be looking for another 24" Fender/Squier guitar if this works to install lipsticks, maybe a CV Duo-Sonic though I hate the present color but the prices for used ones are in my price range. Maybe I'll sell off or trade my 2008 Squier Tele Custom that's like new.

The guitars are helping re-establish the brain/hand-finger signal transmission. I still am plagued with side effects. I transpose the first and second letters in words, and numbers so often it's frustrating. A lot of corrections when typing and it's always the same, 1st & 2nd letter or number. I call things by the wrong name even though I'm trying to say the correct word, like "sausage" instead of "peppers" no matter how hard I try sometimes it just doesn't "click" so I continue to say the wrong word/term. I've also lost words from my vocabulary. I reach for a fork yet pick up a spoon stuff like that.

Same with notes and frets. It's going to take a while, I'm back playing just over a year now as therapy after having not played for twenty years, it was tough when in the bus garage as I'm a righty so if I missed with a hammer it was usually the left hand that took a beating. Lost fingernails, stitches, fractures/splints were common. So my hand took a while to recover after being impaled on a threaded stud in '89 and having two fingers on the same, left hand fractured and split open the same year just prior to the impaling.

Of the Jagmasters, the Vista Series ones from the late 90s, are considered to be the best ones. But you can make the present Jagamaster IIs, sound much better by ditching the pickups. The "Duncan Designed" ones in the Jagmaster IIs, are nothing to write home about - they're kind of muddy sounding. If you don't have a bundle to spend, look into some of the GFS (Guitar Fetish) pickups, that can be bought pretty cheap. They aren't Duncans, DiMarzios, etc., but I myself, and other people I know have had good results with those pickups:

http://store.guitarfetish.com/pickups.html

To keep the stress down on your wrists from bending them around the neck, you might want to sling your guitar higher like a jazz guitarist.

BTW, welcome to shortscale. :) I'm an OT like you (I turned 46 last September). My sympathies for your injuries. I remotely know what you went through. I got hit by a car back in 1989, while I was out running! I cracked a rib (probably when I spun off the car's hood), went into shock, and wound up in the emergency room, where it was determined, that I had suffered a severe left shoulder dislocation (when I saw the X-rays [yes, x-rays, due to the fact they there was concern I'd possibly broken my collar bone] I freaked out - I didn't think a shoulder could be separated by 2 inches!). I wound up out of work for 5 weeks due to that injury. A couple of orthopedic surgeons who looked at the medical files relating to the injury told me that I couldn't have had a worse shoulder dislocation. Still, my experience was a walk in the park, compared to yours!

Squier use 500k pots in all guitars, to disguise weak pickups at times but to streamline production and save money at others. Same goes for MIM standard Fender strats/teles, they get their control assemblies from the same dudes as Squier.

Thanks for the tips, I always preferred to play "high" prior to my hiatus. Since I'm so tall it was uncomfortable playing with the guitar slung low "punk style".

edit - I had the 2008 Squier Deluxe Stratocaster and found the Duncan Designed pickup exceptionally good. It suprised me, the "tone" they were capable ofwhen played through my Crate "V" Series 1512 tube amp.

Dose anyone know if that those Duncan Designed pickups in the Deluxe Stratocaster are better than the Duncan Designed ones in the Jagmaster ?

You can't compare them just because the have the DD logo on them. My M-80 has a DD JB clone and Jazz clone that sound amazing. The ones in the JM are junk.

VERY true. The Duncan Designs in my Schecter Omen Extreme 7, 7-string, while not as good as Bareknuckle Painkillers are still pretty decent.

I'm having a shit time posting from my phone. So YouTube "shoegazer noise" and "kurtz so bad" in which I rock jagmasters. Basically I liked them ok, bad trem and next to no finish on the necks. The sound was decent through a small dirty amp, but sucked through my twin reverb.

How do like the M-80 overall ? Is it the set neck or the bolt on ? I have an opportunity to purchase one in new condition for $179.00 but don't want something I'll have to sell off over ebay again. It would have to be shipped to me in N.J from Upstate N.Y. Lately everything that hasn't met my needs has been shipped off to Scandanavia.

Love it. LOVE IT.

I have the set neck, the bolt on was a budget model and is junk. non dunanc pickups, worse quality neck, etc.
It's my go humbucker guitar. The pickups are amazing... they're clones of a JB/Jazz setup, but I'd be hard put to tell the difference. Electronics are great, hardware is great. Nice and light, though the look of it is love it or hate it. Personally I love it.
The main factor is the neck, the neck is INCREDIBLE. It's 24.7 scale but the closest thing I can compare it to is my msutang neck. Plays very similarly. Not gibson style at all, it's very definitely a Fender neck. Great for chording and noodling. I can't explain enough how much I love this guitar. It cost me $140 and is easily worth twice the price if not more in terms of bang for the buck. In my opinion the master series is the nicest stuff Squier ever put out. Amazing attention to detail, great design. Just a terrific package.

If it's the set neck and you like the style then buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the review. Wish the one I'm interested in was closer. Looks like I'll stick with the offset bodies for now.

edit - Forgot to add, for humbucker growl I have the Fender Lead III and a 08 Squier Tele Custom that has barely been used. It a case queen at this time.

I am always drooling over the fender lead series... wish they would bring those back. How do you like the Squier Custom Tele?
For real short time I had a new jagmaster. I thought it was made real well and didn't see any problems with it. I didn't give it much of a chance to stick around though. A buddy offered me a standard strat for it and I jumped on it. I wish I had've lgave it more of a chance. I think I may buy another one
