today i decided to get off my lazy ass and do a project i had on my mind for a long time. i wanted to put an Epi sidewinder pickup i had laying around (taken from a busted EB-0 RI) and put it in my Squier jazz standard.

my fave bass neck PU of all times.

my trusty stock jazz bass.

all disassembled and ready to be manhandled.

of course i had to make the pickup route about twice it's current size in order to fit the sidewinder.
check the fine craftsmanship. this is the type of damage you can do with a chisel and dremel. luckily the pickguard will cover this up.

a mock up to make sure the pickup fits, and to square it up before drilling the holes for the screws that hold it down.

check the clearance... not bad. couldn't find the original screws and these don't quite fit flush but they get the job done.

used the dremel to cut the pickguard.

final mock up before i wire her all back together again.

when i've got some extra cash i'd like to put one of these Kent Armstrong guys in the bridge just because i think it would look cool.

Wow, I actually wanted to do this exactly with the Gibbo style pickup on GPR but I started using my neck pickup's chrome cover as a rest a lot and thought I'd miss it so I just went for some nicer JB pickups.

Looks good dude, I like it. First glance seems like bass equivalent of Jazzblaster.

That tort is certified mingin' though! I love the pic of it without the pickguard on.

very nice! and excellent job on cutting the pickgaurd.

since the tbird trade didnt go through i think im going to put one of those style pups in my squire Pbass.

Just a heads up and stuff, but I talked to the guy over here who has Kent Armstrongs wound, and regardless of how much I dig the old Dano sound, he informed me of how weak in henries those lipsticks are (even with that bass tube in particular being rated at 9.9k ohms), so much that a blend with something more conventional might not work. The sidewinder is simply too hot-n-thumpy in comparison, and being in neck position it's likely going to overpower a chimey bar-magnet p'up in the bridge quite easily.

I can't exactly prove it, but it doesn't look like a good match on paper.

i don't doubt you for a second. after getting the jazz all wired back up again, the sidewinder is literally twice as loud as the bridge pickup. i'm going to have to find something with a really high output to keep up with it. and it sounds nice! i really should have done this a long time ago.

demo coming soon. right now i'm working on straightening out the neck a little more and setting up the bridge all perfect like.
