A real '59 popped up on eBay

Post by Haze »

http://cgi.ebay.com/1959-Gibson-Les-Pau ... 0201197688

been watching the price since $75,000. Amazing what these instruments go for but I do believe one like this will be worth millions one day.

It's strange they put it on ebay and didn't sell it underground. That guy's gonna have to pay a bunch of taxes and eBay fees now.

How does he know the bridge PUP is double white if the covers have never been off?

No matter where he sells it he will incur auction fees or other costs, but eBay requires no authentication. The counterfeit risk with '59 bursts is very, very high.

Or he just wants it exposed to a global market easily. Still, I would have taken it to Gruhns.

That's not true. A great deal of these guitars are sold in private transactions and while there are costs associated with that it's nothing like an auction house.

You can see what color the bobbins are by taking one baseplate screw out of each side on the bottom (there are two per bobbin) and shining a light inside. They are either side of the magnet so you can see straight through.

Clever, clever, clever...

As for private transactions, how would something like that even be set up? The limited market you get going private would also decrease the price - seems like auction costs are worth it given the larger market.

Here is what Joe Ganzler said on the LPF in regard to this auction :

"OUTSTANDING job on the photos and auction! When you've got nuthin' to hide, you've got nuthin' to hide; those photos ARE "the authentication"!

Having said that, *I* personally don't recommend putting a Burst on ebay as a sales outlet. In reality, there's prolly 12 guys on the planet Earth at any given snapshot in time that are "Burst buyers". From my own personal experience with Burst buyers, I'd say HALF of that 12 are no longer buyers for ANY Burst once it shows up on the 'bay...

I'm sure the "reserve" on this one is set at US$750K, to make absolutely CERTAIN that it doesn't go through ebay. Looks like a great guitar; I'm sure it SOUNDS even better!"

When asked to explain why someone would bother to post this guitar on ebay if they didn't want to sell it there Joe replied:

"Pretty simple - to avoid ebay & PayPal fees! That, and to get the guitar in front of a World market, possibly ferret out some cash/trade offers, etc. Shoot, he might get an offer for a vintage Ferrari in trade, from some guy that lives in a rented storage space!"

It's an investment. Sell it again in 5-10 years. I don't think you buy something like this to actually play it, unless you have an insane amount of money.

the most impressive part is that the headstock has never snapped off and needed to be repaired in 50 years..
i'm sure shipping via UPA/USPS will fix that small issue

T.K.O

It's not even a good looking example. That Epiphone Gold Top I'm buying from Rob is far prettier.

It wasn't at Doogfest III, it was at Doogfest II. Details are in Classifieds.

sorry mike but going by the price it's at now, it's at least two hundred times better than the epi goldtop. you'll never truly know tone until you take out a mortgage to pay for your guitar.
