Good Low Gain OD for Neil Young types of tone

Post by lank81 »

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a nice low gain OD for some neil young typish tones (Down by the River, Cinnamon Girl, Ohio). I'm looking at Fulltone OCDs, MI Audio Blues Pro, and Barber LTD. I'm looking to only spend 100-150$. Any suggestions?

I was going to suggest the Lovepedal Les Lius because I saw PGS had recently received a new batch, but it appears they are sold out. I haven't seen them for sale elsewhere.

Definitely a good choice. Not sure I can find them anywhere else. Maybe someone will have one for trade somewhere on the net.

I recently picked up an Earthquaker Devices Crimson Drive, it's a germanium overdrive and might work for what you are looking for. It's at least worth checking out.

If you really want to sound like Neil, just turn your amp up ALL THE WAY.

If you are trying to simulate.....any of the pedals you mentioned in your original post would work fine. The Barber LTD is really killer and priced right.

I have a MBM DLS and that is pure sweetness but when I have my dano tod before it, it is like sugar ray robinson. Both those are good low gain ods and will definitely get you what you want sounds wise. Maybe talk to Mike anyway and he should be able to sort out the sounds you are hearing in your head

there was a fucking killer interview with Neil's guitar tech in one of the ToneQuest Reports where he talked about how he got his sounds, it was one of the best things i've ever read about guitars/amps.

If it's the one that I'm thinking of, he basically says that Neil Young just gets all his different sounds by turning the volume on his amp up and down. He's got a little electronic knob turner called the Whizzer. The Durham Crazy Horse is supposed to get some pretty Neil Young-y sounds, but I don't think that it's really meant for low gain applications.

^yeah, and he was talking about how his deluxe is different from any other one he's seen and it sounds amazin', also he talks about taking his acoustic pickup and splitting it so every other string goes to either left or right for an awesome stereo sound, you can hear it on the rust never sleeps video. it's fucking RADFUCKIN'

Neil Young can also tell if people reverse his guitar cable.

Here is a link which has a tone of Neil Info. I can crank up my DRRI but it will sound nothing like Neil's crazy rumble Deluxe. As for ODs, I decided to go with the Les Lius. I found one in minty condition for a good price so I grabbed up on it. From listening to it, it came closest to the low OD sound I wanted.

Neil's Tone / Gear

Thanks everyone
