my current ghetto ass atari 2600 guitar rig

Post by robroe »

seeing as im playing with people now on a regular basis, i have left all my good shit in drew's basement.

this is what im playing thru right now in my room at home and it actually sounds fucking good.

Guitar -> Vamp2 modeler -> Guerrilla 20 watt Solid State practice Amp -> Fender GE112 12" cabinet
im just using the practice amp to amplify the signal going from the Vamp to the cabinet out the headphone jack on the back. and it actually doesn't sound like total ass. im amazed. im sure you can buy these practice amps used for like 5 bucks ANYWHERE and they probably sound just as good as that EHX amplifer pedal thing they made.

am i reading this right?
you're going from the headphone jack on the practise amp to the cab?

'cause that doesn't sound healthy at all to me.

Vamp headphone out to
practice amp headphone out to
speaker cab

im not playing at retarded loud levels in here, so im not going to blow anything.

the practice amp doesn't have a speaker out jack, just a headphone jack

I got sick of breaking my back lugging my head and 2x12 cab to quick and dirty jam sessions (gigging's a different story). That's why I got one of these:

Image

It's a Tech 21 Trademark 30. It weighs all of about 14 pounds, and isn't much bigger than a Gorilla (gawd!, I haven't seen a Gorilla amp in years! I used one as a backup amp for gigging about 17 years ago). It has a 10" speaker, and, a DI, with speaker simulation for direct recording. The amp and speaker models (its an analog modeling amp), sound very good, and it can get VERY loud - especially through an extension cab. They go for about $300, but you can find them used, for cheaper than that.

update!!! i bailed on the gurillia amp because after 20 years the headphone jack was complete shit and wouldn't work unless i pushed on the cord a little to get it to sit just right in there to get the signal to com.....bla bla bla you all have experienced shitty headphone jacks you don't need me to elaborate.

ENTER THIS:

this is a boston acoustics powered sub woofer with RCA outs on the back of it that are supposed to go to satalite speakers for your computer. well Pickle the cat chewed thru one of the lines years ago when i had this thing hooked up to my TV set. so its just been sitting in the bedroom under a bunch of papers doing nothing.

i plugged the guitar into the Vamp, then ran a line from the Vamp to the powered subwoofer and then ran a line out the Right RCA jack to my Fender GE112 speaker cab.

i looked up the info on this thing "boston acoustics BA635" and the thing is only 6 watts but holy shit you can turn it up loud. Hilary was always yelling at me to turn down the fucking TV when i had it plugged into that. the actual subwoofer has its own independent volume gain for the sub speaker so i turned that down to zero to turn it off so all the guitar just comes out the 1 12.

its working great for practice and playing along with songs n shit coming out of my VERTICAL MONO stereo monitors

its good to think outside the box once in a while with guitar equipment. you don't always need a tube amp in all situations to sound good

hahaha

still a great thread, rob. my days of hooking up headphones to use a microphone and using a fender r.a.d. amp as a PA are well behind me, but i do appreciate the crazy combinations of ghetto rigs. hell, when the dudes broken into our house last year, they took the power adapter to my computer speakers, so i had to use one from some piece of electronics that i do not remember for the life of me. only 1/10 of volt off in the specs and works like a charm!

Why not just drill the back of the Gorilla for a 1/4"jack socket and wire it up as a speaker output?
