Jagmaster Modification Question
Been lusting over a Jaguar ever since I played a bandmate's during rehearsal, but I can't get myself to spend the cash.
Then I saw taylornutt's video on converting his Jagmaster into a Jazzmaster style guitar (bummer 'bout the crack). It occurred to me to try a similar thing aiming in the vicinity of a Jaguar, instead.
I figured it'd total 'round $500, figuring:
Ballpark $200 for used Jagmaster
$116 for pickups (or similar)
$108 for pickguard (70 + 15 for each "changed" hole + shipping--this seems steep, is there anything cheaper?)
~$26 (maybe) for 1 Meg Ohm pots
~$30 Shielding paint
+ Claws?
But at $500, its getting pretty close to CP Jaguar. What do you think? Is this a stupid idea?

Get you some cheap aluminium shielding tape for 4 bucks, it'll easily do a whole guitar (insides and pickguard)
you can get avri jag pickups for around $40 a pop, claws are up to you, some say they cause microphonic feedback but that's just another tasty feature of jags
you can get 1 Meg pots from guitarfetish for much cheaper
pickguard is awefully steep. If you're handy get yourself a blank sheet for $20 and cut your own. Some other shortscalers have had good and bad experience with some of these aftermarket pickguard folks, someone will chime in I'm sure.

lwl point taken. I'VE BECOME NOCTURNAL YO. I've been up since... 11 pm?
Isn't the jagmaster very similar to the jazzmaster body? Which is dead close to a jag sans where the top horn meets the neck joint.
If you're looking at spending 5 bills on a jag knock off I'd think you would be much happier with a classic player jag for somewhere around 650

i hear this. the more i think about it the more it makes sense.hotrodperlmutter wrote:just buy a fucking jaguar dude. you're going to end up with a shite chinese jag knock off and you'll never fully experience the jaguarness that makes the whole thing worth imitating.
still into hearing more input anyways--with haze's help and after talking to pickguardian i got the project down to 400 bones.. i spose it still seems like too much trouble when i can just wait til i get paid and have the real deal.

I'm sure your costs will go up once you actually start buying stuff to convert the Jagmaster... they always do! I'd just rock the Jagmaster while saving up for a CP Jag. If you want a Jag, you want a Jag.

i bought a red jag with matching stock for 500 bones shipped on ebay, and altho it was a nice guitar, it wasn't what i was after, and i paid 450 for a lpb jaguar off of a forum member here, and once again, it lacked the (avri) quilities that i liked so i sold it to serfx, and now i have a black jag with matching headstock(BATJAG!) but until i plug it in and give it a good run, im afraid that it will go the way of the donkey.
but jap jags are good, just the pups suck, and don't get suckered into the duncan crap, it sounds like ass, get some avri pups, those are tits.
or go the cp route, those are "decent" enough for the price.
