Sounds like a metal slide being rubbed against the strings and towards the neck.

you can see what he's doing.

he's doing some very small pick scrapes with his picking hand while using the slide to change the pitch.

Nah, put it on 720p and fullscreen- he does it again at 1:08 and his fretting hand isn't moving at all; it's all being done with the right hand.

It sounds a lot to me like he's rubbing beside the bridge with the slide, and fretting notes with his left hand (dunno what three fretted notes are, but they're being played for two beats, then one beat then one beat).

So the slide is making the sound and the fretting hand is giving approximate pitch.

I think.

Also, the long slide down before he starts strumming uses the right hand, suggesting that this is where the slide is.

EDIT: I used to do a similar thing in a Bacchus song using a spoon.

thanks. I overlooked this video.

Hard to get that high-pitch overtone on my jazzmaster.

The peel session version of this song is stunning.
