HALP!! (doom guitar suggestions)
looking for a guitar that can handle doom/ sludge/ crust as well as post punk/hardcore and post-rock. got a fender bassman ('68 i believe? it is silver face.), and a few pedals on the way. however, i am about to lose my guitar (friend "pawned" it to me) so i find myself in the market for a new axe. was thinking of getting a carvin, but i'm just not digging on it now. was thinking telecaster deluxe, but those wide range humbuckers are not my style. now i find myself intrigued by this gibson sg classic (had a special when i was 15 or 16) but i haven't played one in years. are the p-90s as sweet as i remember and will they handle the styles i play? thanks.
Any guitar can play any style of music, the amp and effects generally have a lot more to do with the end result.
That said, I think P90s can get a great heavy sound. However, you really just have to test it out. Most people would just tell you to get something with humbuckers, but P90s can handle distortion nicely.

was definitely thinking some sort of muff would find a home in the chain. the p-rails sound like a good idea but i really would like to just buy something that will work for the style out of the box, and the only guitar i've seen with p-rails stock is that ugly LTD pb series. any other guitars have the p rails stock?

I used a Fender Jag-Stang and Roger Mayer Mongoose Fuzz for the Stoner/Doom band i'm in. You can use almost anything though, you just need a decent Fuzz or Distortion, keep the treble low on the amp as well and obviously down tune. If i remember rightly the guitarist in Napalm Death (at the time) used a Marlin Strat on the first album, and that sound he got was brutal.

tis tru, its not really about the guitar as much as it is about the effects, and the amp/speaker size.
does your bassman have a drip edge? if so you have the same year/style as my bassman.
if you are indeed on the hunt for a new guitar(axes cut wood, guitars make sound) deffinitly look at something with p-90s, they handle distortion very well and can clean up nicely.

nevermind, a quick google search informed me. i'm not sure, when i get home in a few hours i will investigate further. it was a gift, the giver told me it was a 1968 but i have had problems dating it, though a free bassman is a free bassman. i have deduced from the silver face that it can't be later than 70's. The person who gave it to me actually found it in a taxidermy shop, goes to show that you can really find some cool stuff if you look.

robert: no drip edge, i am having a hard time dating this thing, maybe you could be some help/ know someone who could in that department? ends: what the ever loving fuck is that thing?
the sg is sounding good right now, though that black dove tele deluxe looks like the best of all worlds for me. and my stache is nothing on iommi so i won't even try!

I think you should look at vintage japanese options.

cogito ergo sum...thing or other...
Won't matter which guitar you use when it's going into a fuzz and a bassman dude (within reason). I'm sure p90s could do it but they might be more feedback prone.
