Truss Rod Nut Squier Super-Sonic

Post by Aoresteen »

I picked up a 1996 Squier Super-Sonic neck (made in Japan) off the 'bay and it arrived yesterday. It's in fairly good shape. It's missing the truss rod nut and the tuners. Needs a new nut as well.

Image

I contacted Fender USA and they do not have any replacement nuts. I sent a note to Fender Japan so maybe they will reply next week. The truss rod nut looks like the Febnder bullet nuts of the '70s like this:

Image

(I found the photo on the bay as well; it's not my neck)

Anyone know where I might find a proper nut? Any idea what thread size they are? I'm very sure that they are metric and the Stewart Mac nuts are 10-32

Also, I'm thiniking about getting Gotoh vintage tuners. Stewart Mac & Warmouth both sell them. Anyone use them?

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... uners.html

http://www.warmoth.com/Gotoh-Vintage-Tu ... 6C728.aspx

I haven't decided on what body I'll put this on; with the 24" scale I'm thinking of finding a 60's or 70's Mustang. Any known issues with using a Squier Super-Sonic neck with a Mustang body?

Ideas?

Thanks!

that's weird. i didn't realize the bullet wasn't apart of the truss rod itself. wtf, someone took it out or it's broken?

i find that extremely odd, and saddening. what is this going on? misshapen neck heel, no?

It really is a nut . It's just missing.

The neck heel seems fine - but I've never owned a Super-Soinc so I don't know for sure. I bought it 'cause I like reverse neck scrolls.

Here's what I did to a '65 Teisco Tulip:

Now I want to build a short scale guitar with a reverse scroll.

until i can get that shit to work ill drop science on the other end of the neck

it won't fit on any other guitar without serious modification to the guitar. in other words it doesn't work on mustangs/mms/duos.

the heel is cut differently. the overall shape of the neck is a thicker C shape than a mustangs medium C shape as well.

the neck plate is also one of a kind. you NEVER see them come up on ebay. i wouldn't even know what to charge someone for one

Sounds like a challenge! I could always send the neck to Warmouth and have them make a Mustang body with the correct neck pocket for the Super Sonic neck. I'm thinking a hardtail with a rear routed control cavity.

Warmoth wouldn't do it, they refuse to do anything that isn't already programmed into their CNC. I know because I've asked them to do stuff before.

The lefty tuners you will not find at Stew Mac. I've already contacted them about it, they do not sell a set that readily fits. You'll have to use those Warmoth tuners.

The nut, uh I've just always got them from my local shop as blanks and cut them down to fit with some sandpaper and files.

The bullet is just a standard bullet like the other Squiers.

That neck will not go on any other guitar other than a Supersonic. It has a really weird heel as Robroe said. You will pretty much have to get a Supersonic body to fit it to.

If you do decide to just get rid of the neck and get a different shortscale neck, I'll buy that one from you, not encouraging you to give up on making this project work, but if you do want to get your money back out of it PM me.

Thanks Pens!

I ordred the Warmouth tuners and string tees (in gold no less!) earlier today.

I don't give up so easily. I'm very handy with a router so if I have to get a body and rout the neck pocket myself so be it! One thing I will not do is mod the neck to fit the body. I will build the body around the neck.

Now if I could just find one of those pesky neck plates... in gold of course!

Thanks for the offer to buy the neck. I'll keep it in mind.

Here's a double neck I made:

Wow. You have some balls, and I wish you well on this project. I want to see the result of this!

I'm really not sure about where to get those neck plates, Fender pretty much pretends these guitars don't even exist so finding parts is going to be very tough.

Also, if you happen upon any more of these necks lemme know as I would like to get a new neck for my Super Sonic at some point.

Keep us updated!

im all for this shit.
i kinda think its funny, but in a serious way.
i will keep checking thread for tips to give / jokes to make
its about 50/50 at this point.
i really do hope in the end it turns out awesome. a lot of us have tried before and failed with this neck.

I never got any farther than taking the neck off of the soapsonic and mocking it up to a mustang for lulz.....then quickly bolting it back on the SS body

I think it wouldn't be too difficult to put it on another body, but it's going to require a little work for sure.

Is that neckplate in a recessed route to be flush with the back of the body??? NICE.

This was the best Vista, hands down. The only one that doesn't look like a bunch of leftover parts slapped together.

Any idea why they made the neck route like that?
