EMGs...

Post by othomas2 »

Your guitar would sound identical to an EMG equipped cereal box with strings strapped onto it, let alone the sound difference between 9 and 18v power... Grrrrrrr....

Not one for spamming but 'say what you feel man' !! Drop a comment !!

maybe it's just me... but I feel like a grunged out ol' hippy.

and Fran if you're reading, I will love you no matter what pickups you use... !!

It's a compressed youtube video that was recorded through a camera mic. It's not the best in terms of sound quality for making such a judgement.

But that's not why I'm scared.

I'm scared because I bought a bamboo steamer today and some kimchi stuffed dumplings. I steamed them in the steamer and ate them and they were frighteningly delicious. Also the bamboo steamer smelled really nice while being used. Presumably the smell of the bamboo.

Playing with that much gain will destroy any sort of dynamcs that may be occuring at your fngers let alone different woods and construction of an instrument. A friend of mine plays a dual rec Mesa and recently asked me if he should put emgs in his fancy ibanez. Simple response, "Why? So it can sound like all of your other guitars with emgs?"

I was talking to Hatebreed's guitar tech and helping him put the guitars back into the cases after the show. Amongst all the Jackson V's, there was an old SG. I asked him what year it was, and he said it was a '72. It was fitted with an EMG 81/85 set though, so it sounds exactly like every other guitar he had. Shame.

What's more his tone is highly regarded by almost everyone.

That video sounds good to me for Metal tones. EMG are fine pickups, more so for clean playing as well.

Honestly that is not a good metal sound. I know a good heavy rock sound (Kerbdog, Metallica's Master Of Puppets, Casa Bonita) and I'm sorry, but this is miles off.

Could be recording/camera area but I heard NO BALLS.

There must be BALLS.

Yeah, especially if you want your clean sound to lack any form of character or nuance and just sound like a brickwall limiter. Yup, they sure are fabulous for clean guitar sounds.

Are you thinking exclusively of the 81, 85 and HZ? They make other pickups too. Mark Knopfler and Dave Gilmour have some of the loveliest, chimiest cleans evor.

Yeah I'm thinking of the market leading humbuckers. They are what people mean and/or think of generally when they say "EMG pickups".

Dave Gilmour also has a ridiculous Pete Cornish pedalboard and Knopfler makes bad alt country so they're not bastions of taste as far as I'm concerned.

What has taste got to do with anything? We're talking about sounds here.
