i guess that's all well and good, but what's the point of the fucking screws?
It looks like he took it off after putting the wiring under the pickguard. He really likes tape though.

like i said, he replaced the duct tape with packing tape.

so therefore, it's still on there after putting the wiring under the pg.

he even put the screw back in the hole he had the wires running through.

Isn't this one the most recent picture? The wire's underneath and there's no tape on the control plate.

I have no idea of what is intention was, but that would be my guess. Either that, or to counter the internal springs to make it less sensitive.
yeah, but think about it, it doesn't counter the springs at all. think of the see-saw like motion of the stop bar posts. the stock springs pull the bottom of the posts towards the neck, the gate hinge pulls the top of the posts towards the butt of the guitar. so in the end they're both pulling the stop bar in the same direction, back against the strings.
cogito ergo sum...thing or other...

Hmm... you know, I do believe you're right! So basically, wouldn't this "mod" be similar to increasing the strength / tension of the internal springs, since it's pulling in the same direction (but from the opposite side)? IOW, it's something like adding two more springs to a 3 spring equipped Strat trem.
