Besymer- recording blog for "Dead Head Poetry"

Post by the isaac eaton »

I thought I would make a recording blog since today is the first day of 4 days that we are going to be recording our 5 track EP, Dead Head Poetry. I'll Edit this post with more information and stuff about the recording process and such as the days go by. We are recording at Rainmaker Studios! A great local recording studio with a fantastic engineer running the whole thing. We will also be showing footage from the studio on our podcast next week. This friday is just another normal podcast, next week's will include footage from today and then repeating that process for a few weeks here. you can see the podcast HERE

Day 1- All the drums went extremley well, just recorded some scratch vocals and guitar and then joel knocked out the drums. Fun times were had and it all went pretty smoothly all 5 songs recorded in one day, good drum sounds and what not. things are sounding good and im really excited for the rest of the recording time. Next week is the guitar and bass day. That will be much more exciting! But yeah, im not a drummer so i cant really say much for him.. actually he's in the room right here ill ask him! "I don't know what i would say about the drums" yep a great quote for sure. Anyways TILL NEXT WEEK!

Day 2- Today we did our singer's guitar, rhythm guitar. We ran him direct into a program called GTR by waves, for his sound which is a very metal modern heavy tones GTR was great. although the direct box for it ran off of 2 9V batteries or a 12V power adapter, Brook (our engineer and owner of the studio) doesn't have an adapter for it......So we had to keep changing out the 9Vs all the time. it was a giant hassle and took up a lot of time. While spencer recorded his guitar I was in the other room messing around with the studios guitars and stuff. I figured out I really like the tone of gretsch neck pickups. I think I am going to end up using my friends 1965 non reverse gibson firebird on the majority of the recordings. I was really impressed by his Telecaster he had there, it was really really nice. Also he has a couple of music man guitars, We used them for a little bit of spencer's recordings, they sounded nice and played like a dream. His guitars took about 3 hours to do, I really want to take half of that time, it just took way to long because of so many little things.
Anyways after we got done recording his guitar we did some group vocals. Our friends Brian and Jon are in town for a bit this week and they came by to do some little vocal parts here and there, we did group chanting and screaming. It was a lot of fun, but after that we were all pretty light headed and sore throated, BUT we did get some great takes and those vocal parts are going to sound absolutely huge. Next monday is day 3. this day is going to be intense. We have to do all of my guitar parts, all of the bass, and all of the vocals in 5 hours. Ive been practicing all my parts with a metronome to try to get things absolutely tied down and solid so i take the minimum amount of time. We will see how this day goes. probably going to be rough, but I got high energy and enthusiasm for it. I just hope it goes as smoothly as possible.

check out the podcast this week to see all the studio footage from last thursday!! the link is up above!

Sounds like its going to be fun on monday
Musicman's are built for one thing - to play, and thats all they do. They play effortlessly and sound great. Look like ass, but super smooth.
