it's a tight fit but usually you can make it work. you might have to kind of sand the corners on the hotrail a bit.

I've never got one to fit over top. As a matter of fact, I've had to sand out the corners of the pickup hole on vintage pickguards to get the hotrail to fit right. On reissue Mustangs the pickup fits perfictly into the pickguard, but can't imagine how a pickup cover would fit over top.

Yeah, that's not a hotrail though. Duncan hotrails are made with plastic covering the coils instead of cloth. There's no way you can get a cover over that.
But by your picture it looks like you can get the cover over a pickup that's "like" a hotrail, as long as it has cloth covering the coils. The pickup you have looks a lot like a Duncan Performer and obviously, by your pic, with a little sanding or cutting it can work.

There are 2 different designs for the Duncan single coil sized humbuckers... old and new.

That copy above is based on the old design, the newer versions have the plastic shell cover.

I think robroe has managed to fit them with success...

I seem to remember someone prizing the shell off the newer type also. Maybe it was he....
