'63/64 Parts Jag Finished!

Post by Dice »

Well, she is done! There were a few twists and turns and a couple of issues, but I have managed to turn a '64 neck and a '63 body in to one of the nicest playing and sounding guitars I own!

Parts include:
'64 Jag neck - Headstock face refinish.
'63 Jag body - stripped
All repro hardware aside from:
MJTele aged tuners
All repro guts aside from:
vintage 60s mini tone pot and thumbwheels
Pearloid repro guard
AVRI pickups

We started with the neck:

And the body:

Stripped the headstock face:

And refinished it:

Applied the decal:

Using my '65 for a reference:

Not too shabby:

Then the body was primed and finished. Had a few issues along the way. I ended up doing heavy tinting around the horns and forearm areas, similar to my last build. The darker areas aren't so flagrant in most light!

Image

I was out of natural light by the time I had it wired up and assembled late today...

The flash doesn't flatter this color very much...

Image

Again, I hate the flash...

I'll get some better photos at some point tomorrow if the weather is decent!

This guitar plays and sounds fantastic. Thanks to TerminalVertigo for the neck!

I still need to buff the body on this guy... I may get on that tomorrow. I was just too excited to get it assembled! I've never been one for patience...

that looks fucking great dicey.

however, you need to tint that guard ASAP!

EDIT: dude, some of those frets are gnar! how does it play? i would assume it fucking rocks, but some of the wood is pitted/dented/gouged, etc. i'm sure you knew this already...

The fretboard and neck are super comfortable - as nice as any vintage neck I own. Nice and broken in. The frets are a bit rough, but they play fine. I was planning to have them leveled or get a partial refret - after playing it, I'm leaving them alone.

OK - did some preliminary aging on the pickguard. Looks like I need to do a lil' more work between the bridge and the bridge pup!

Thanks! It took a bit of getting used to - but I think it has grown on me (particularly after the shoe polish treatment!).

Looks great, but I do think it would look better with a flat white guard (aged).

did a good job applying the decal. it's weird how often people screw it up. the only minor detail is the "contour body" is supposed to be at the same angle as the rest of the text. oh well! guitar looks great. I like teh pearl.

I echo Thom's sentiment. It looks fantastic but a mint or aged flat white guard would be BONERPANTS

Thanks everyone!

I noticed the "offset" decal was jacked up after I applied the "Fender" decal. Oh well! Its a total amateur job.

Mint Guard was the plan when I chose the color. I had been planning on doing a Lake Placid Blue finish, and ordered a Pearloid guard for that, and a Mint guard for my Bronco both on the same day. For some reason I woke up the next day thinking that I had ordered the opposite... picked Sherwood Green for this project, did the finish, and about shit my pants when the Pearloid guard arrived.

It is growing on me, though.

Needs a few dings and it'd look super HOT !! needs somethin to help with the aged look. That will come in time though.

Lovely work, I too quite like the guard...

Is this Nitros finish then ?
