Fucked up dust cap.

Post by plesiosaurus »

Oh wow.

So there has been a crappy sharp rattling noise coming from one of the speakers in my old Sunn cab when playing at high volume. When I first noticed it I looked through the grille cloth and noticed what looked to be a tiny crack in the dust cap. That was about 9 months ago. I lived with it because fuck it, I'm punk rock and I'm lazy, but it has been getting worse, so I finally checked it out again.

Holy shit, that crack turned into an enormous hole. It's about the size of hole made by making an "ok" sign.

Here's a shitty picture I took with my laptop camera pushed up against the grille cloth. (It's the jagged hole below the circular one. I don't really know what speakers these are but I imagine the circular holes are supposed to be there)

I am guessing this is the source of the noise. Anyone have any experience with this sort of damage? Can I just replace the dust cap?

Feel free to direct me to a forum that might be a little more specialized toward this sort of thing.

Need a decent pic, but if it's got a hole in the middle it's not really the dust cap, it must be some sort of diffuser. A dust cap prevents any crap getting in the gap between the voice coil and the magnet pole pieces. I think you need to get the grille off or remove the speaker so you can get at the damaged part, and check for any pices. If it's a plastic diffuser, you may be able to glue it back together. If not, find the speaker model number and consider either a repair kit or repair service (Google for loudspeaker cone repair).

So I cracked that sucker open...

Looks pretty hideous. I figured that part of the speaker was toast so I just ripped it all out, being careful not to damage the cone. The rattling is totally gone. I might just be imagining it, but I think the highs can be a little more piercing now when I play loud, but that's a much more subtle and much less severe problem than the horrible flapping metal-fart noise it was making before, so I am happy.

more picturessss...

Oh, wow. I thought you meant there was meant to be a hole in the "dust cap" but actually the dust cap is gone to hell. You need to get something over the middle to stop any crap falling into the voice coil.

hopefully you didn't cut away any of what the cap needs to adhere to. I had a similar issue with my d120f, but sold it.

I just pulled gently and teased it off.

The circular hole was meant to be there, but the other hole wasn't and soon merged with the intended hole to become a blown out piece of shit.
