Mexi-Duo

Post by mezzio13 »

Because I had some ambitious streak hit me, I started stripping the Mexican Duo body that I had laying around. I'm going to do it with a strat neck (there is only a 1/8" adjustment on the bridge to make it work). Havent figured out the color yet, choices that are high right now are:

Daphne Blue
Dakota Red
maybe Comp Orange
Sherwood Green

Right now it was that crappy orange, with a liberal sloppy coating of Dr. Pepper can color on top. Zip Strip has it's work cut out for it...

Best o'luck with the stripping - I chemically stripped a black one and it took about three days. I don't think I roughed it up enough beforehand, really. They have a bulletproof clear sealer on them under the colour.

I used the lawn mower method. I put a bunch on, and mowed some of the yard. Then I'd scrape that off and repeat. The extra time really helped do the trick, although I think I'll take advantage of the undercoat being pretty hearty. :)

I really agree with that, but I'm still on the fence. I think I'll let the kids decide.

For pups, I'm using a Lace Red in the bridge, and Blue in the neck. They are both black covered, so that will have some bearing, although, that does open up the possibility of fake relicing. All things that I'm not decided on yet.

they came in red in that series. If you're going to paint it I'd do it up as something that was unavailable.

LPB, Sonic Blue, british racing green...

something like that.

Well, I found two cans of ReRanch Surf Green. They were the ones that I tried to send over seas to Timhulio, and couldn't find anyone who would ship them. Tim said just to use them on a good project, and I think this shall be it.

Bonar, if I do say so myself.

You mean you don't like the finish that's on there now? I'm loving it- but then I have issues... OK, subscriptions.

Ahhh, nothing like paint stripping by moonlight. Excuse the crappy cell phone pic, please. Still... you can see that I'm down to the fullerplast, or whatever they use for poly finishes. It's sanded to about 320 right now, and I've been trying to level it with a block. You can see the low spots (the ones that still have color in them. I'm sort of suprised, but not I guess.

There are also a bunch of dings that will need some sort of fill, but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions would be noce.

The cavities were gunked up with layers of Dr.Pepper paint over the shielding paint. I tried zip stripping this, but it was too hard to scrape the perpendicular surfaces, so I busted out the dremmel, and a sanding drum, at low speed and went very lightly. It turned out good enough to primer up and pray later. Then I'll either copper shield, or spray shield afterword.
