Dinosaur Jr Lead tones

Do you think you would be achievable to replicate similar tones from a standard big muff pi... ? (or Rams head if I win the lottery ?)

I'm always using Jag and classic 30, & would like to give fuzz another chance.

I know he uses the Big Muff but I think he also has a Univox Super Fuzz if memory serves me correct.

One of their B-sides from the 'Feel the Pain' single was a version of 'Get Out of This' that was entirely solo, you should track down a copy - I would email or something but I have it on vinyl.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like there's too much Muff going on in that solo, way too much midrange. That's the thing about trying to emulate a studio track; god knows what gear was actually used on the session.

That was a sweet solo. I haven't really heard any of their newer albums... or really many of their older albums for that matter.

Pretty neat sound though - never knew he used all those pedals as I thought he really just stuck with fuzz sounds.

Ah, the Univox... On certain settings, this is the sound I have in my head regardless of the Dino track. Cheers for that. Gonna try hunt out a copy of some kind.

The Behringer SF300 is a copy of the Univox incidentally, if you're looking for a cheap starting point to see how it sounds with your gear.

Current Dino albums are small Fender and Vox amps. Leads are mainly Tele and rhythm is mainly Gibsons with P90s.

My mistake- it's a copy of the Boss FZ-2, which is kinda based on the Univox Super Fuzz.

I've meant to start advertising the Ram's head version on my website in a Purple Box actually, there's just some minor tweaks to the circuit - they all do sound subtley different though.

The Ram's head itself uses PNP transistors and is positive ground, so I'd probably make the violet Ram's head version. Pedals that can't be daisy chained are a pain in the arse.

I need to finally get around to boxing up an IC version aswell from my layout (Silver) but I'm just so busy at the moment.

That GC rig is a bit out of date. The sound you are talking about is way more simple than that.
I got down the front and tried to figure out what he was on with last time i saw Dino and looked to me he just switched to the second stack for solo's, a blazing stack may i add. I dont think he switched the Big Muff off either.

Try a Tubescreamer after the Big Muff, thats the closest sound i've gotten to it. It boosts the clarity and midrange massively with a lot of sustain. I know Mascis has a shitload of them 'Rams Head' Muffs but i found the black russian got me closer than a new nyc model.

He also has his action high on the guitar with heavy gauge strings, this will effect the tone a lot.

Owen, I've got a Ram's head clone you can borrow if you want. I've obsessed over Mascis's tonezzzz for years - I thought I heard one our students nailing his sound in the studio a while back, and ran in fully ready to plunder his gear secrets, only to find him playing the electric violin. Fuck.

My favourite Mascis-aping trick is the fuzz-wah-distortion sandwich - plumb in all three pedals and mess with the wah to pick out frequencies, feedback and odd cadences. Lovely.
